The latter g3's just have a hole in the foot in the place of the magnet. It's quite fun to stick a bunch of them on your refrigerator all at once or stick them upside down on the shelves at good will...

At the Toy shop I go to to find ponies, they display their bargain  g3's by sticking them to a metal vent via their magnet. Pretty neat idea and saves on space :3

I was never able to tell if it was a true story, but the news site I saw it on attributed to Associated Press. *shrug* So much junk that's made up online these days. Those magnets posed risk to a lot of electronics and it's understandable they took them out.

They stopped doing it about the same time they took the tiny magnets out of the LPS toys. Risk of them being swallowed, and two at the same time can attract to each other and pinch stomach and intestinal linings, causing blockages and worse. Some of the G3 magnets were ridiculously easy to get out of the foot, and some were nearly impossible to remove. And they were darn strong magnets!

And yeah, I stick all my G3 customs to my lamp stand to dry! (and my daughter sticks them to her Victorian fireplace ^__^)
