scrubing with toothpaste and a toothbrush (not on painted areas)  helps with odor as well. And it leaves them "minty" fresh

Oh my gosh you guys these are so gross!!!! I just brought them in to attempt to do something with them and I am getting a headache already :( Needless to say I went ahead and left the negative feedback today, I absolutely hate doing that and usually use it as a last resort but the seller insulted me by saying that I had better return all the accessories and they will use the pictures to make sure I do like I am some kind of scammer. Then when I said I didn't think it was fair for me to have to pay ship them back they snapped back saying had it crossed your mind that shipping would be included in your return??? At that point I was just disgusted all around and decided to keep the stinky ponies just so I wouldnt have to deal with their snarky mouth anymore. They could have went about if very differently and I still would have gave them a positive even if I did return them, really disappointing :(

OMG, I bought stinky ponies from this same seller, too!  The good news is, I had great success with cleaning them thoroughly with tooth paste then going about washing with soap and conditioner.  I also used a touch of vinegar, too.

I guess I probably should have been more upset with the odor, but based on the auction description, I didn't have high expectations.  Granted, she DID say that she Fabreezed them and they didn't smell.

"Let it be noted, these are not 100% perfect. They are old and they are played with. I will not do any exchanging or any refunding. If you have questions ask them before committing to a bid. Thank you.

ALL ITEMS ARE SOLD AS IS! NO REFUND OR EXCHANGES!! ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU HAVE THEM!  THESE ARE NOT 100% COLLECTION PERFECT! IF YOU SEEK THAT THIS IS NOT IT.

More than half of the items I sell come from swap meets, community sales, flea markets and so forth and so on. They do come from a smoke free home. So, with that being said, if there is any residual smell of smoke, it did not come from my home. I do lightly Febreeze things so they don't smell."

Please don't take this as rude at all and I may be totally off base here but people sell stinky ponies every day on ebay and I am curious to know how you knew exactly which seller I purchased from since I didn't mention it on here...unless you are the seller?? anyway
If my auction would have even had a mention of smell like yours did I would have asked before bidding but according to the descriptions she lists them as being pretty darn nice, actually they used words like AMAZING condition, phenomenal shape, immaculate shape....it didn't strike me to ask if they have a repulsive smell with a description like that. The listing had no mention of smell whatsoever, and in this particular case a smell this strong and off putting should have mentioned, I was not expecting them to be perfect and I could see they were not perfect but this is ridiculous! I literally about puked when I opened the box. Omitting an issue like that is just asking for problems, like I said before this was not the typical smoke or attic smell, it was disgusting.

This is what my auction said:

Its the British invasion all over again! This auction is for MLP G1 UK Exclusives. They were not sold anywhere else other than the UK and a few other European countries. Here they are, those lovely fillies from far away!!!

From year 11 of generation 1 is one of the Great Hair Ponies, Ringlets. She is white with pink and light blue waves down her side, her mane and tail are pink and white with no cuts or missing plugs. She's just dying to get that perm done! She comes complete with her original yellow comb and her original yellow with pink polka dot hair bow with pink, yellow, and blue curly streamers. All in AMAZING condition.
From year 4 of generation 1 is Honeycomb. She is white with BRILLIANTLY bright neon green hair and busy bees on her bum. She is also in phenomenal shape as is her hair, also no cuts or missing plugs. She comes with her original yellow flower comb.
From year 4 of generation 1 is Hopscotch. She is pale blue with a gorgeous shade of purple for her mane and tail. She has the game of hopscotch on her bum, which is in immaculate shape.
From year 4 of generation 1 is Snowflake. She is hot hot pink with silver freckles on her cheek and a semi faded silver snowflake on her bum. She has white hair which, like her friends, has not seen a pair of scissors their whole lives. (Please keep in mind with metallic material being used, light and angle WILL and DOES affect it.)

I thank you for stopping by to see the second wave of the British invasion, happy bidding and good luck.

I will not do any exchanging or any refunding. If you have questions ask them before committing to a bid. Thank you.

Sorry for being a creeper - this post just stirred up my curiosity.  The stinky smell that you described was so specific it made me think of an auction that I just won for a So Soft Crumpet and her baby: My Little Pony G1 SS Crumpet and baby (#201098012036).  I received my ponies on June 7.  So I was nosy and went back to my purchase history and saw that the seller had a recent negative feedback that said what you had described in your post: "Ponies have a *VERY strong smell, it made me sick, seller rude and insulting F-."

Ok...

For the discussion about the seller, I would suggest a TS thread if you have not already started one. :)

For the smell - initially wash them of course with a water, soap, fabric softner and vinegar soup and then take some time but keep the ponies in fresh, flowing air [i.e. literally outside or somewhere there is a continuous flow] for a week and then store them in a sealed container with baking soda and kitty litter for a week. Then fresh air for a week, then baking soda for a week. And continue to repeat will eventually clear the smell, even if it takes some time.

Thank you Hathorcat I will try that :) my intention for this post was just to get help on how to get the stink out of these ponies. I could care less about dealing with this seller because I'm keeping the ponies and just left the negative feedback that is deserved. I think doxiechick was maybe confused about what I was asking about?? It was never meant to be a thread about  if the seller was in the right or if I was, that was something she brought up, which is why I was kinda frustrated about her post . Anyway I think I have a lot of good advice here and hopefully I can get these girls fixed up :)

Oh my gosh!! That would suck to get ponies like that! I have allergies and asthma so I sure would have some problems with them ponies. I did get a Breyer horse one time that smelled like smoke so bad. I was not able to get rid of the smell and had to sell it.

I hope some of the things that has been listed do work for you :)

I had a similar situation recently so I sympathise! unfortunately my isue was with DVD's, labelled as 'like new' but came stinky, covered in gunk, broken cases, scuffing on the cardboard cases, and scratches. urgh. For my ponies, I alternate baking soda and fresh air - I've had both amazing results and no result at all with it, and just a warning with the vinegar method - on g3's with that shimmery finish, vinegar can remove it. I have a Wisteria with a line down the middle where she was floating in it, lol after a gust of wind blew her in while I was soaking some other stuff.

Ugh...It is never fun getting something that is in "yuck" condition :( Thank you for the advice and the warning about vinegar, that is good to know because I would have had no idea.
