random question!
« on: June 03, 2014, 07:14:16 PM »
since this is gonna be my first custom, I was shopping for paints to use and picked up some of the ones that was suggested on the sticky.  While shopping I ended up staring down a giant tub of Gesso. Bane of my life during college XD and had a quick thought:

Has anyone ever use Gesso to just..completely white out a pony? see what kinda of coverage it could get?

:frolic:  its just a rather amusing thought I had, there was also gloss mediums and matte mediums.

I haven't tried it but I was wondering the same thing the other day! Because painting even a white (stained) pony white again is a huge pain in the *** I thought how would Gesso work. I think I'll try that next time I want to make a white custom.

I use gesso, it works well but needs to be done in thin layers to avoid brush strokes.  You can sock it to knock them down but best to thin to get it smooth.  Let me see if I can the pony I used it on - I used a sponge to apply in this situation.

I've used it on all my customs I've done so far, and love it. If done in thin. Coats with a flat brush, I find it gives a very smooth base coat. I do lightly sand the pony before I start with an actual color, too the gesso gives a good tooth for your paint color to grip on to. :)

I second sunshine29102, it's great for priming! I don't know how well it works on its own, possibly depends on the brand as some varieties tend to be smoother than others. Mine feels quite rough to touch, you would definitely need to add a coat of sealant on top. I doubt I'd be able to get it look as smooth as white acylics, but it certainly helps the painting process by giving you a nice opaque base coat to work on so you don't need as many coats of paint. :thumb:

Gesso on it's own will yellow.  I use a mix of gesso, titanium white and iridescent white, all artist grade tube acrylics.  That does not yellow.  Also what sealer you use can make a huge difference as some of those can yellow as well.
