I got Barnacle out of the seller's box and dampened his hair with conditioner to comb it through. When I started to comb it the hair started breaking mid-hair shaft and coming off in clumps! Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I have never seen anything like it. I think he must have been treated with some chemical cleaning product that has ruined his poor hair. Luckily I just bought a re-rooting tool and can re-hair him but I'm still quite disappointed, he's otherwise near mint.

Yes, I have a Gypsy and a Sail-away that this happened to.  Also, a Fairy Tail Bird with orange hair.  I thought it was something to do with the colouring of the hair since it's always that orange/red colour it seems to happen to.

wow poor boy! i dont know if its the lighting of the picutre but his symbol also has a weird bleached color.. and his hair should be bright red-orangeish, it looks pink on the photo.

looks like he had a bath in hydrogen peroxyde O___o

My guess is oxyclean or sunfading with peroxide. Ouch!

Jeeeesh, poor Barnacle! I'm so sorry your poor pony has ended up this way! He does look like his symbol is bleached too x

Yeah! I have an orange G3 that I was brushing the hair through and the hair kept falling out in huge clumps! It was awful. It probably does have something to do with their hair color. Unsure, but that's a pretty good point.

Oh no, it seems like bleach was used! Thanks so much for your commiserations and advice everyone.

I think I'll try for a partial refund.  Since his symbol is now pink and yellow I think I shall re-hair him in a light yellow and light pink.  Tea rose and... not sure about the yellow.  Hope nothing horrible starts happening with his plastic too!

Update: Sellers says no - doesn't believe me and wants him returned for a full refund. I only paid a tenner for him on ebay. can't decide what to do.

If he has been treated with bleach can anyone advise if there's likely to be more problems?

I would send him Back, one wonders why he was cleaned with bleach that is crazy.

I agree. Send him back. I wouldn't value him higher than about £6 in that condition. The seller was dishonest, so I'd send him back. I say dishonest, sin et hey didn't even tell you he was in that rough condition. X

He could also have been exposed to chlorine and then sunlight at some point in his past - that almost always makes hair brittle over time. Either way, I agree its no doubt a result of some kind of chemical on his hair which has caused the issue. The serious fading to his symbol is also an indicator it could be a sunlight or bleach exposure.

It may not even have been something your seller did or was even aware of. I would package him up and send him back; if he is as described in the auction and pictures but not in the condition you expected thats the easiest option
