A bigger My Little Pony story

I've decided to try writing bigger stories - maybe for slightly older kids? I've set out my version of Little Pony Land and tied it in with a 'head canon' based on my nearly completed collection. So now I can think of stories! This piece is a little like 'a guide to' rather than a story in itself. I have tried to explain some of the odd biology going on within My Little Pony, while keeping it sweet and polite what do you think? I've added a few 'photos  I already have but I'll be replacing them with better/more relevant ones and hopefully painting some backdrops so please check back

Introduction

Little Pony Land is a magical land where the Little Ponies live and you can find it just beyond the rainbow. There are different kinds of Little Ponies there called the Earthlings, the Pegasi and the Unicorns.  Earthling Ponies traditionally live in the the grassy Meadow and use their magic to make the flowers grow.  The Pegasi have beautiful wings to fly with and their traditional home is Cloudsdale, high up above in the sky.  All the Little Ponies have  their own special magic, but the most magical ponies of all are the Unicorns.  Their traditional home is the Free Forest and the Whispering Woods. 

Each little pony has their own special place. This could be the seashore, a merry-go-round or simply a tree in a meadow! There are also pony buildings like Bowtons Boutique where ponywear is made, or the great castles of Weathertop and Dream Castle where the Little ponies may retreat in times of trouble. Some Little Ponies have their own pets too!

The Little Ponies belong to their magical land which, on the whole, is happy and harmonious. As the seasons change in Little Pony Land, the Little Ponies all help Mother Nature in her work.

Long long ago the Earthlings, Pegasi and Unicorns learned that they could live happily together and nowadays they all share their talents and gifts, living and working together in the seven Pony Guilds named after the colours of the rainbow.

Ponies of the Pink Pony Guild all work together with love and relationships, celebrations, humour, grooming and costumes. Their special places are the Grooming Parlour, Bowtons Boutique and the Wishing Well. At the Wishing Well Sunbeam, Heart Throb and  the other ponies plan parties and events for all the Little Ponies to enjoy.

Orange Guild ponies work together in education, the arts, sports and games. At the Little Pony School, Lullaby Nursery, Arts Time Studios and the Stables and Gymkhana, the Little Ponies of all ages have fun and do their best.

The Yellow Pony Guild ponies all live far away from Little Pony Land on a beautiful tropical island! Although the Little Ponies love Little Pony Land, they sometimes sail in Angel's Boat across the gentle blue sea to visit Paradise Island, where it's very warm and the light is very bright.  The yellow sun shines all day as the little ponies play volleyball and picnic on the beach. As the sun sets in the evening they dance at Club Tropicana.

Ponies of the Green Pony Guild are concerned with meadows, gardens and all the plants, animals, insects and birds of Little Pony Land.  Their special places are Magic Gardens, Flower Patch Meadow, Sweet Apple Orchard and the Waterfall.  Cascade lives at the Waterfall with her friends Duck Soup and High Flier. Her pony friends often come to  play. They love to climb the rainbow and dive into the waterfall. High Flier likes to play chase, but the Little Ponies can never catch her on her butterfly wings!

Blue Pony Guild ponies take care of the weather and water in Little Pony Land.  Their special places are Weathertop Castle, The Seashore and Cloudsdale high up above the clouds. The Earthlings and Unicorns can travel up into the sky the sky in Lofty's hot air balloon!

The Indigo Pony Guild is mysterious and very magical. Ponies of the Indigo Pony Guild study the night sky and the magic arts.  Their special places are the Whispering Woods and Dream Castle and Observatory.  In the Whispering woods, all Unicorns can see glimpses of the future if they look into the Limpid Pool. Gusty knows all the stories of the trees and turns the leaves into a blaze of colour in Autumn.  Majesty is Queen and High Priestess of all Little Pony Land and lives at Dream Castle with her pet dragon, Spike.  The Little Ponies often go to her for advice in matters of magic, and she is also fond of a good party!

Food and drink are a very important part of life in Little Pony Land.  The Violet Pony Guild works in food and drink, creating enchanting  recipes for all the Little Ponies to enjoy.  They work at Rene's Cafe and the Sweet Shoppe providing lovely picnics and high teas.  They often spend time with the Wishing Well ponies to plan birthday surprises for the Little Ponies when their special day comes around.

The Little Ponies are magical creatures in a magic land where anything is possible, and many things about the Little Ponies remain a mystery.  However, I can tell you that most Little Ponies are female although there are male ponies too.  The Mountain Boy Ponies live high up in the Misty Mountains and every autumn they visit the female Little Ponies in the meadows, woods and valleys so that one spring day new Baby Ponies will be born.  Strangely, the male ponies are all Earthlings.  No-one knows why all Pegasi and Unicorns are female, or whether they are immortal or just very long lived!  All that is known is that at some time all three races began to live happily together.

PIC WITH A BOY

When a Baby Pony is first born it isn't known whether they will become an Earthling, Unicorn or Pegasus until a few weeks have passed when a little hump may begin to show on the forehead or two humps where wings will grow. Most Baby Ponies are brought up as part of their Mother's Guild and usually have similar talents, joining in with the fun.  When the boys are older they go to live with their Fathers in the mountains and one day set off to seek their fortunes in far away lands.

I like the idea of colour based guilds! The photos are also lovely, in addition to illustrating the writing, they pace the story nicely by dividing it into manageable chunks.

I'm sure you would know what all the influences are so it's great to have your feedback.  I'm hoping to populate a Bowtons scene with pastel coloured accessories from the second release of the grooming parlour (with Kisscurl) and/or the second show stable. I was just googling for info on what and wasn't included when I found this adorable site: http://www.alaska.net/~jnoble/sailaway/sitemap.html I can't work it out whether the line drawings were done by this person and they are just lovely.

They are stunning! Colouring books like this must be my new grail! I decided to collect UK comics 1 - 40 because I love how you get more of a range of expressions in the comic art. But there is something about the black and white line drawings particularly of the pony buildings - just makes me want to trace them, colour them, adapt them... :skips off into Ponyland:

I love more in-depth pony stories~  What kind of genre are you thinking of doing?  Adventure, slice of life, ect?

I'm thinking adventure because I love Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, the Channel 5 films 'Flight of Dragons', 'The Last Unicorn' and also Tolkien's Middle Earth. The idea of the ponies being archetypes fits well with this kind of writing and also ideas around duty, inevitability and fate since due to the 'cutie mark 'system and the added layer I am adding with guilds. I love certain aspects of Pratchett's work - it's funny and colourful and zany celebrating magic and mythology in a way that's much lighter and more accessible than Tolkien. The Channel 5 films are a favourite with a lot of people on here I know, they are just so beautiful. I have borrowed things from all of the above and will borrow more I'm sure!

I was planning to just keep posting in this thread 

I love all my ponies so much that I just don't know who to develop as characters first. I think I want to keep working on my locations more and make Little Pony Land seem 'real' in my mind, then maybe the ideas can take off. 

I have this massive head canon (please see below) that is basically my collection. A lot of the choices about who I've included are about 'How much variety from the toy line (poses, colours, concepts) can I cram into my collection given the limited space?'... I have a few more ponies to get, some 'would-like-to have's' and also a handful of de-flocks and customs to finish before I can say the collection is finished. In the end I want to have an example of each pony in the canon so I can take photos to illustrate the writing.  It's way too large to be a cast for a single story, I really would have to write like Terry Pratchett to use them all properly!
