Pony Hair Help!!
« on: June 06, 2014, 11:17:23 AM »
Ok so I am not sure if this topic is in the right place....but I need help from some more experienced pony people :)

I would like to get into fixing up older ponies and I have a couple in mind that I would like to purchase. The only problem is they need their hair fixed. So far I have only tried fixing one ponies hair and it didn't turn out too good. I used a flat iron and followed some instructions from online....I conditioned the hair...and kept it damp while flat ironing. The mane didn't turn out too bad but the hair on the tail actually starting burning. Thankfully this was only a practice pony.....her hair was really bad and frizzy because its one that my 2 year old has put through a lot but needless to say this does not give me confidence to move on to other ponies....

Everything told me to put the heat setting on my iron on low which I couldn't do because my flat iron only says on and off.......its a pretty expensive salon iron because my mother in law is a hair stylist so she gave me one for free. Do you think this was the problem?? That the iron just got too hot?? I would also appreciate some more advice and different techniques for getting smooth beautiful pony hair. Thanks  :)

If there is no setting on your straightener, you can turn it on for about 30-40 seconds and then turn it off. Start right from the beginning- don't let it heat up and then use it.  Start from the beginning and do quick swipes, not long ones. You roll it down the hair and the hair will smooh. When it starts to crackle and fizz it is getting too hot. Just make sure you keep it from getting  too hot, and you shouldn't have a problem.

Haven't done this myself, but I know you can use a real iron (like for clothes), and those usually have low settings for synthetic fabrics so they don't suffer the same fate as your practice pony's hair.

Unfortunately there are quite a few things which can go wrong. Did you swipe through the hair in very small sections but move the flat irons much quicker than you would on human hair? Did you make sure to not repeat swipe sections until the hair had cooled down? Did you allow the hair to cool as you went and ensured to not allow heat to build up over the whole tail?

My honest suggestion would be to keep on practising; pick up some baity G3s and work on restoring their hair with the irons. Its a much better idea to be perfect or near perfect at the process before you tackle something more expensive. And dont worry, no matter how many times you flat iron its always possible to have a burning/melting incident.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
