Okay so my question to Funko was this:

Quote
* Last year's SDCC Funko My Little Pony "exclusive" was a clear/sparkly version of :muffin: Pony and of Rainbow Dash-  that looked like this:  https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-40wQ3d8fsBk/UcEMwFWgh0I/AAAAAAAAEok/Cc_6-C1mZV4/w695-h638-no/P1020049.JPG

Amazon had them available for a while as an "amazon exclusive."  I have to assume that the exclusive was shared between Amazon and Funko - since they were also at the SDCC.

As you can see- the sticker on the boxes says "1008 piece limited" "SDCC 2013 FUNKO exclusive"

Our question is this: were the clear :muffin: Pony and Rainbow Dash ponies ONLY released as SDCC exclusives, limited to a 1008 edition?

Or was there any other release of the clear Rainbow and :muffin: Pony ponies?  Seems like a stupid question, but there is quite a lot of debate as to whether Funko went ahead and released more "editions" after the first limited edition of these "limited edition" ponies.

Any clarification you can provide, if you know, would be truly appreciated.  Thank you so much!

Looks like my question got forwarded to the director of sales, Anne Aquino-Rapanan, who got back to me just now.  She confirmed yes The sparkle velar version for Rainbow Dash and :muffin: Pony were only released for SDCC 2013. Amazon had part of the quantities.

So there really was only one release- only for SDCC 2013, and Funko split the exclusive with Amazon.

I do love how responsive Funko is to just a random fan.  Also found out they do tours! (which I am so going to do now)

I will confess that I followed- up again- just to be SURE that the edition sizes were in fact 1008

I asked:

Thanks Anne-  so the edition size (for each) was actually limited to 1008 than?

She answered
Quote
Yes  :)

Best Regards,

So FOR SURE there really is only 1008 sparkly Muffin ponies, and 1008 sparkly RD ponies.  I don't think the director of sales would lie (no reason to).

So THANK YOU FUNKO for not being jerks like WeLoveFine.  I had a feeling they wouldn't (just given the nature of their customer/fan base vs. the fan/customer base of Welovefine) but it's very good to have some confirmation.

As for getting back on topic-  I actually think that it's MOST likely that he ponies will be large versions of the black mini ponies recently released.  Not sure which one other than DJ.  I HOPE that the ponies will be Shadowbolts-  but I actually can't see DJ's design working out as a Shadowbolt-  what with the glasses and all.

I'd love a goth makeover of the funkos- but don't see it happening.  Most of their stuff is pretty darn cute, so I can't see them doing something so poorly thought out and executed.  (Wouldn't mind in the slightest though if they actually took the concept and made it better-  but again, that seems pretty unlikely)

Yay! Thank you to Funko for being kind enough to answer and for actually doing what they promised :) Soooo reassuring in this world of commercialisation. I stand corrected. :)

I guess it really just is that they are surprisingly unpopular after all? Hopefully over months and years that makes it easier for people to track down the sparkle versions of the other releases as well.

I think the number of collectors that want the sparkly variants are smaller than those who want the regular "show accurate" ones.   I don't think the brony community at large seems to care overly much for the sparkly ones-  for whatever reason.

Also-  there was never a feeling of scarcity for the Muffin and RD pony.  Amazon released them in a huge flood all at once.  It is darned hard to find the other glitters, because although technically there is an infinite supply-  a store will only open and stock a new box of 24 when the other regular looking ponies have all sold off the shelves.

But you may be right that they were just unpopular in general-  maybe that is why Funko is not going with sparkly clear variants for this year's exclusive.

I'm very glad someone from funko got back to you. They are great and very responsive to their fans/community.

I know we are still wondering what the ponies will look like but since there were so many 'leftover' from last year what will this years edition size be? The exclusives in years past were much lower. With the largest edition number being 480. Last year was the first year that some exclusives were 1008 editions. A lot of the 1008 items are still floating around at retail or less.

Clarification is nice, though I don't regret importing my sparkly Dizzy Hooves even if it had turned out to be an infinite supply. She was cheaper to import than buying the regular version here (I wish I was joking...) and she's very pretty aside some paint mishaps and black smudges.

On the whole I can see why they are less popular, though. Not everyone cares for the variants (I dislike most of them, Lyra and Dizzy are the only exceptions) and by the time these two were announced I'd imagine many people that wanted Rainbow or Dizzy had already bought the regular versions and didn't have space or money for the variants. Plus...I daresay the appeal of a "chase" figure goes down when it's just there a click away, rather than having to seek them out.
Idly searching for: loose, good condition G4 Blossomforth, Starbeam Twinkle, Plumsweet. TTM Celestia doll's wings Within UK or EU only, please.
Will also take in Pretty Pony Club (UK magazine) fakies.

Since Funko is kind enough to answer questions, can we ask them for this year exclusive?

no? Pretty please. The waiting is killing me....

This might be very true! "It's not the having, it's the getting," the old expression goes.

So it was across their SDCC exclusives that large numbers struggled on? Out of curiosity was it most of them or did some fandom items sell like hotcakes?

They always give clues-  usually pretty easy to guess.  That is why it looks like this year's exclusives will probably be the mini blind bag (black) versions of DJ and some "sporty pony" (maybe Dash).  Another possibility is that Dash will be a Wonderbolt- but I think that less likely.

Some items sold out and were in high demand such as a world or Warcraft pop figure. That one was an edition size of 480 or so. But others are still available 10 months later online at gemini collectibles. Usually the disney pieces are hot items but they are still available on gemini.

I wasn't keeping track of every piece. Personally I just purchased the ones I liked the best. Some have sold out while others are still around. Some were edition siEs of 480 and others were 1008.

I think they offered 75-80 (maybe a few more) exclusives last year and about 40 are still available to buy on gemini.

Last year funko related pics of the various pieces starting 10 days (or so) before the show. I hope they do that again next year and I hope that the ponies are full size.
