Greek ponies reek of smoke! :(
« on: May 10, 2014, 06:49:46 AM »
I just got a set of two Greek ponies and a stable in...and they reek so badly of cigarette smoke! I'm trying to figure things out with the seller, but I need to know - is there any chance of getting the smoke smell out and that lovely Greek vanilla smell back? Half the fun in collecting Greeks is that amazing smell.

I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to get the smoke smell out of them, since it works with other ponies, but it might be harder to get the specific Greek scent back :(

The only thing I've ever found to work really well on smoke is a bleach/water solution.  That's what they use to clean it off glass and windows and walls.  I've never had a Greek pony though - I do know it worked amazingly well on US ponies after baking soda, freezer storage, tons of washing, and toothpaste all failed miserably.  (I have a crazy sensitive nose, though - I can smell smoke a mile away.)  Giving them a good scrub in some water with a little bleach in it took the smoke right off the plastic.

Only way I know of getting back that vanilla smell is maybe stuff them near some vanilla scented air fresheners. It's pretty close to Greek pony smell if you can't get the original back.

Bleach sounds a bit harsh for scent treatment. I think the smell will dilute off if you leave the ponies out to air in the open long enough. You can admire them all the time and they get "healthier". lol

The smell will fade over time :) leave them out to "air off" as DebonaireThundercloud has suggested.

I would give them a light wash with soap and water.

A cycle of fresh air and then sealed in a tupperware with baking soda or kitty litter - repeat as many times as required will get rid of the smell over time. :)
