Doll hair. Any prep needed before I rehair?
« on: May 08, 2014, 08:33:24 PM »
Cross posted at Monster High Arena

I'm beginning to do my first rehair. I have my doll prepped. Head taken off and all hair and glue removed.
What I need to know is there anything special I need to do to the hair before I start?  I haven't yet cut it to size, as I got two 38' hanks of saran hair from Dollyhair. I'll be using the knot method.

I am curious too as I would like to undertake this project in the near future.  I know there were a couple of videos somewhere on this.

I don't do any prep. I cut my hair to length and take small sections of the hank at a time to take my plugs from and leave the majority of the hank in a bag. Then take another section of the hank as needed. I found that when I had the whole hank sitting out it got tangled or messy.

i use the needle and thread method. i take a strand of hair, thread it and stick the needle through a hole in the head and cut off at the desired length. i use that same strand if long enough for the next hole in the head. repeat until head holes are full. its up to you are thick or thin you want your hair strands to be when rehairing.

Before I switched to the rehair tool, I would cut my hair to length (well a little longer than, so I had some wiggle room) and tied a bunch of the knots before starting. Then I'd stop when I ran out of already tied knots, and do a bunch more. This was for ponies, not dolls, but the idea is all the same I'm sure.

Once you've got the head ready for the hair, I think you could do it in any manner that suits your workstyle, really. Whatever makes the most sense for you. There's not a lot of prepwork needed unless you want to organize it in a particular way.

I prefer to knot all my hanks first, then widen and rehair all at once.

I find having a water spray bottle to hand helps if your hair pile gets unruly

Wash it. It makes it more manageable later because it removes the factory oils.

After you cut it down (or before, but after is easier), give the whole hank a gentle comb-through. You're going to lose what looks like a lot of hair to tiny tangles, but it's really not that much (and you're likely to lose more if you let it stay and try to sort it out while splitting the plugs). If it's being staticky or flyaway, give it a little spritz with water to tame it down. Other than that, you really don't need to do any prep.
