Way to safely secure a pony to a display case?
« on: April 16, 2014, 02:16:28 PM »
I'm going to college soon, and vastly downsizing. I'm only going to keep a couple ponies that are close to me, and my plan was to get a few acrylic display cases and display the ponies in them in some cute scenes with fake flowers, etc..
Well, what would be my best bet for securing these ponies to the scene so that they won't budge.. but also won't harm them in the long run? I had thought about using a small amount of crazy glue on the hoofs, since if in the future I wanted to remove them to sell etc I could just take a little acetone to it, but would it harm them after a while? I had the same concerns about using some sort of putty to adhere them... I don't want to check on them eventually and find that what I used had affected the plastic somehow!

Does anyone have any ideas? :--)

Oh goodness, no, I wouldn't use krazy glue if it were me.

What I've used in the past when displaying customs at conventions is Museum Putty or Museum gel. It's strong and non damaging. My dad used to use it all the time to hold sculptures and other art pieces in the art museums he curated. You can buy it on amazon I'm sure.

Ok! Lol, only reason i considered krazy glue was that putty made me nervous because i know some have been known to mess up pony plastic/make it sticky?

Wouldn't blu-tac work? Or would that not be secure enough/be bad for the plastic QuQ?

I would not suggest using anything that isn't archival safe - the aforementioned museum putty would probably be fine, but virtually all glues, putties, clays, and adhesives are inherently unstable and thus liable to react with plastics overtime.  They are not stable substances, neither is vinyl, putting them together is almost always bad news.  Blu-Tac is definitely on the unstable list and should be kept away from ponies.

There is such a thing as white-colored Tac - it's the same stuff, just without the dye. Of course, when I used it in my dollhouse, it really didn't work too well. :\
I'll put something here some time

^This. While ponies are not rare books or museum items, anything which is going to be attached to the plastic for a long period of time needs to be as kind and neutral as possible. I would also recommend museum putty - you can pick it up on amazon and in some craft stores. I use it for display items all the time and it almost always means prototypes and products can move from event to event without any damage issues.
