KitKatVintage - Your Pony's Finished!!!
« on: April 21, 2014, 02:46:36 PM »
Hi all,

Nirvanas really aren't my thing and this isn't where I usually hang out, but I think this is the right place to post this.  Forgive me for anything stupid I might say . . .

Nearly a year ago KitKatVintage gave me a Brazillian Cotton Candy in really awful shape.  She said she just wanted the pony to be loved.  I asked around and it sounded like she wasn't rare enough that I'd be hung for restoring her.  I've never hemmed and hawwed quite so much over what to do with a pony.

The super shiny-ness is awful plasticizer leakage.  She had a really scratched eye, nearly missing symbols (due to the plasticizer) no tail and a horrible mane.

Originally I thought I'd just do the bare minimum so as to keep her as original as possible.  I cleaned off the plasticizer (it's still not come back much) and touched up her eye as it's personal preference for me.  I hate it when pony's eyes are super scratched.

I thought I would give her a real pony tail and just decorate her mane with a bunch of flowers, instead of doing a full re-hair.  Her mane was coming out in chunks so that soooo didn't work.  I had two real pony tails available, both pink, so I tried to re-hair her with the real hair.

That didn't work at all either.  I couldn't quite dye the hair for the mane the same color as the tail, and I didn't like how frizzy it was and ultimately I didn't have enough.  So, a full re-hair with dolly hair it ended up being.  What weird little neck holes!

At this point I figured I'd done so much to her that I might as well fix up her symbol too.  Here she is!

It's not the best restoration I've ever done and I probably should have gone with a lighter shade of hair.  But the point was for the pony to find a happy home and I'm quite proud to have her displayed as my only nirvana pony!

KitKat, I hope you're happy with how she turned out.   :)

She looks fantastic!! :cheer: I'm so glad that you could give that poor sticky little darling a new life.  I know you take great care in restoring any pony that can be saved rather than tossed in a bait bin, so I'm very happy that Brazil Cotton Candy can be a part of your herd.

One question: how did you clean the plasticizer-leakage? I have a few mildly sticky ponies in my herd, so I'm always interested in a "cure" even if it's temporary.

I'm so glad you're happy!  :)  For the plasticizer, I think her contact with the plastic baggie she was in was causing a reaction that was making it worse.  Plastic bags contain plasticizers, and plastic contact with other plastic can make the reaction worse.  For her, I just let her soak in a hot OxiClean bath.  That's all she really needed and she's stayed pretty clean.  This  might mean that most of her plasticizer had already leaked out.  A little of the sticky came back, but it's not near what it was.  You can also scrub the pony down with acetone to kind of strip the plasticizer off (also temporary).  If the returning stickiness bothers you, a lot of folks find that dusting the pony with baby powder helps to minimize the weird feel of it.  I highly recommend that you don't store them in plastic bags or let them touch other plastics until the process is totally finished - I don't know how long that might take, it probably varies based on the pony.  I'm a pretty strong believer in keeping the ponies out in the open air where their vinyl can breath, with a cool temperature and low humidity where possible.

Thanks everyone, btw, I was really nervous working on a nirvana so I'm glad you think she turned out ok!  :)

Totally second the baby powder trick. It does not cure it but it stops it significantly and as long as you renew it on occasion it really helps with the problem.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

I've heard of baby powder being used too, but I've never tried it myself. I've found a wash with soap and water helps :)
