20 Year Anniversary - Death of Kurt Cobain
« on: April 04, 2014, 10:55:12 PM »
So, I don't know about anyone else here but I was a diehard Nirvana fan growing up. I truly identified with the music, not a day went by that I didn't blast their songs. I even remember plans to get tickets to Woodstock '94 only to find out that Kurt Cobain was dead.

I cried when I heard the news. Never had I felt more connected to a band than I did with them. For the first time in my life, I felt like someone else got me and understood where I was coming from. All of that was shattered when I learned the news. I was devastated.

Throughout the years, I've come to realize that although I am a fan of several bands, some still together, others now defunct, none will ever come close to having the same kind of impact and presence that Nirvana did.

So, were any of you a fan of his/theirs? How did you feel when you found it? Do you still remember that day as though it were yesterday? I do. I remember everything from where I was to what I was wearing to who I was hanging out with at the time.

20 years already?

Cobain passed before I was even born of course. So I'm afraid I can't share the feelings I had finding out about his death. My parents introduced me to Nirvana, we have the Nevermind CD (Which I stared at a lot as a kid, because of the cover. First time ever seeing something like that uncensored  :P).

I love Cobain as a person, his views on the world. I liked watching interviews he did. I remember a few weeks ago I saw photos of his death scene and the note and the box of various items he had.
All I can really say is Rest In Peace to a true legend.

I read a nice memorial of him last night. I can't believe it's been 20 years already! I wasn't a die hard fan, and was only 10 years old when he passed but I liked a few of their songs. I remember people telling he didn't really kill himself, it was Courtney Love who did it, either herself or hired someone and since adults told me so, i believed it for a long, long time. I came into that music scene more seriously as a young teenager, but liked Silverchair more, even tho they were inspired by Nirvana.

I'll be playing smells like teen spirit (the song, not the album), and Come as you are today.

I also was - and still very much am - a Kurt Cobain fan. I was 13 when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out. That was the first I'd heard of Nirvana. (I didn't know about their "Bleach" album then.) I have all of their CDs, including bootlegs, which I never buy of other bands. I've read all the books. Due to the strange events that don't add up, I believe someone was paid to kill Kurt. I think whoever got rid of El Duce got rid of Kurt.

Edit: Oops, I didn't answer your question. Like everyone else, I was shocked when I heard! His body was found on April 8, which was 10 days before my 16th birthday. Remember when MTV did "MTV News" at 10 minutes to the hour every hour? That was the only news they talked about for the longest time. I didn't know anything other than what I was seeing on the news, so of course I thought it was a suicide. It wasn't until "Unsolved Mysteries" covered his story that I heard it might not have been a suicide. Then I read the books when they came out. I really don't believe Kurt did it.

I'm not saying Courtney hired someone, but it was convenient for her that he died when he did. After all, they had a pre-nup and were talking divorce. She was already angry that Kurt turned down heading the Lollapalooza tour, which would have earned him nine million dollars. She didn't have to go through a nasty divorce, at least. :|

"And IIIII don't have a guuuuuuuuuuuuuun~"

I was watching the news when I found out.  I locked myself in my room for three days and played nothing but Nirvana music.  After that... I was a totally different person when it came to music.  I used to love all the pop music and all the rock... after that, I could only tolerate rock and heavy metal for the longest time.  So much pain!  Whyyyyyyy?  *gets all sad*   I think it "drove" me to become a Goth for a time as Grunge was now dead.  :(

I still light a candle and sing a Nirvana song each anniversary.

Favorite song is still either "Something in the Way" or "Come As You Are".  Or possibly the cover of "Man Who Sold the World".

There is no doubt that Kurt Cobain/Nirvana forever changed the sound of music and had a lasting impact on their fans, both at the height of their success and long after his death. Nirvana broke ground in the industry, making way for the bands that followed.

Some of my favourite songs are:

Lithium, Love Buzz, All Apologies, In Bloom and Man Who Sold the World

All Apologies still makes me cry when I hear it.

Some of my favorite songs: "Verse Chorus Verse" (the "With the Lights Out" box set version), "Milk It," "School," and "Dumb."

Come As You Are and Smells Like Teen Spirit are my favorites. In Bloom is also pretty high up.
In my animal crossing new leaf game I have three different characters. If you meet them, each one has a greeting that is one of the first three lines to Come As You Are.

I was 6 when he died but having 2 older brothers I listened to nirvana
I own a few albums and the best thing is that Rockabye Baby made a baby album of Nirvana. Actually my 3 daughters are listening to that everynight when falling asleep.

He died during my senior year of high school.  I listened to them in high school, but I didn't become a more serious fan until after his death, in the summer of 1995 when I bought Unplugged in New York.  That's when I started paying a lot more attention to Nirvana's music.  I feel so old.  It doesn't seem like his death happened 20 years ago.  Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to the band if he had stayed alive.  Would they still be together now?  Would The Foo Fighters even exist?  Who knows.
