Does anyone have a picture of the giant Starcatcher plush?
« on: March 15, 2014, 04:40:26 PM »
I'd love to see what the 3 foot Starcatcher prototype plush looked like, I'm sure she is so beautiful. Even if its just a blurry catalog photo I'd really adore being able to see her, can anyone help?

Finally able to get on to my home computer, here are three Just Premiums Toys catalogue photographs I have saved of the giant prototypes. I believe they were hosted on a pony site which had lots of info pertaining to the giant plush but which I can no longer find and may have gone the way of the ghost. :(

In searching I also found a brag post from the member who won Butterscotch, if you love giant ponies in general then their post is a real treat. They appear to have all nine Aussie store releases, Kimono (Australian competition prize), first edition Frilly Frocks (US Pony Points program prize), PLUS prototype Butters. That's the most complete a giant collection could reasonably be! ^.^ The only other giants known to exist that they lack are Star Shimmer (who was only used as decoration at a Starlight Foundation event), and prototypes Star Swirl and Star Catcher.

Thank you so much, its lovely to finally be able to see her. As expected she is lovely, although I expected her to have smaller, shimmery wings like the small G3 Pegasus plush. Butterscotch was actually the first pony I ever bought when I was a little girl, she is special to me so the Giant version would be amazing to own too.

The post you linked me too is my own personal heaven, I have Frilly on the way (she should arrive Monday) and Pinkie Pie and Twinkle Twirl are on my wishlist. Honestly though if I just have Frilly and manage to complete my collection of Pajama cases I'll be very happy, but owning all of the Giants would be such a dream come true.

I have always suspected the wings on that image were mock ups unfortunately. There is just something about them when you look at the pictures very close up which doesn't sit quite right.

Those are the only pictures we ever ever saw of her. As mentioned Butterscotch was found but likewise a smaller Rainbow Dash with a "not for resale" [or something like that] tag once showed up. So clearly some of these prototypes made it out and now into the hands of collectors. I am sure the basic part of her was made for that image so you never know...maybe one day!

I'm fairly sure that actually saw the Rainbow Dash for sale on ebay once. She was sealed in a bag and I planned to buy her but she sold right before I got paid.

Perhaps that was a second one? The one I have seen was not in a bag she was simply loose :) If I remember rightly she was a sales tool to be used to pitch product.

Either that or an extremely good fake. I'm certain it was Pajama plush style and size, I wish I'd saved the picture  >_<

IIRC the small Rainbow Dash was exactly the same as wave one giant RD with the thick fluffy fur, except her tush tag read "sample" and she was 22" tall, comparable to the mini giants released years later. I believe the member who purchased her made a thread either here or on MLPTP, saying they contacted the manufacturer and were informed that there were five characters in all made as samples to show the details of what they would be producing. I have a few photographs of sample RD on my home computer but I won't repost them, unless I can't find the original post/member's name. I'm on my phone right now anyway.

Edit: Woo-hoo for emergency commandeering of the PC! Is it alright to link to MLPTP threads on the Arena? AusMLP owns sample RD, the initial thread about her existence is over here, and there's also a later show & tell thread showing her in comparison to the three wave 1 giants and US Frilly Frocks.

The one I remember appeared to be less 'furry' but maybe that was just the lighting?

She was such a good find I wish I'd bought her, then this mystery would be solved
