Clay clothing advise, please
« on: February 24, 2014, 12:42:10 PM »
Hello, you can probably gather from the title that I'm hoping to get some advice on making clay clothes on an MLP. I'm trying to go with with a flowy type skirt, but I need to put a lot of details for the texture and to make it look like it was stitched together.

Is it best to do the clay work with the pony already on a baking tray, or is there a way to move it safely without messing up the clay?

Is there a trick to getting the folds to fall or do you just let the clay pretty much do it's own thing for that?

I was rolling my clay out to about 1/8 of an inch, is that too thin?

Any other advise or tips/tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Tyr

I would love to know the same things myself...I've never seen a tutorial on it, and I've not started sculpting clothes, so it's new for me too.

Also, to add to the above questions, is it best to work with Sculpey or Apoxie Sculpt for the clothing, and can you use it in the pasta maker the same way you can for Sculpey?

I haven't done many clay clothes. Just a couple which I did with Super Sculpey.
Depending on how you make the clothes you may be able to move it to a tray without messing up your work. If you have any doubts though I would just do the work with the pony already on the tray.
With the few I've done I didn't have a pasta machine to roll the clay so I just rolled it out with a rolling pin to my desired thickness. You can use rounded things like chop sticks, pencils or paintbrush handles to help you manipulate the folds in the clothing.

Some people do great clothes with Sculpey others do amazing work with Apoxie Sculpt. Just depends which you prefer. I tend to be slow and indecisive so I like to use Super Sculpey because of the open work time.

I don't think you could put Apoxie Sculpt through a pasta machine as I think it would be too sticky. Just roll it out with a rolling pin and water.

I'm not really a sculptor but we have several members who sculpt clothes frequently. I'm sure they'll be along to help shortly. If fact I'll go see if I can track some down for you.

When I sculpt clothes I roll the apoxie as thin as I can without breaking it.  I then let it sit for a while so it's not super soft when putting it on the pony.  I drape it, then cut it with scissors usually.
Yes, you can put apoxie sculpt through a pasta machine, just make sure you clean it very carefully when you're done.
