This post could go on various locations here, but I think this works.
Yesterday was my first birthday without my grandparents. My grandma died this summer and my grandpa a couple of weeks ago. We were pretty close. I've been living in a different state now for nearly 10 years and this was the first year in my whole life without a card from them. Even towards the end of their life my aunt would pick one out and sign it for them. They were usually sparkly and usually kind of old-lady ish, and usually my favorite.
I thought I might be sad, and I was a little in the morning, but my husband worked really hard to make the day fun. We went to church and then to Olive Garden (my absolute favorite) with a friend who's birthday was Friday. Then that evening we went bowling with a couple of other friends. We even bought pizza and a pitcher of pop at the bowling alley. My hubby was really going all out! Then a bunch of people from church, half of whom I don't even know, showed up. It was a total coincidence, they didn't know it was my birthday or that we would be there. They got the lanes next to us and were like "surprise, we showed up for your birthday too!"
My husband wrapped my gifts so pretty, all in pink with polka dots and curled pink ribbons. I opened them at the bowling alley and showed them to these people who don't know me and don't know I collect ponies. They thought they were pretty neat. Somehow pink ponies wrapped in pink seemed to fit the day.
Then on the way home we stopped and he picked up my favorite cake and he got a really nice bouquet of roses. The photo doesn't really do it justice. He also did some housework for me on Saturday so that I'd have the free time to enjoy all this. He did pretty good.
