Flutterbye Flying Fairy doll: why NOT to buy them!
« on: January 01, 2014, 11:03:33 PM »
Okay, for christmas I got a flutterbye doll. These are fairy dolls that fly. I always thought they were alright, besides needing a lot a batteries. well, anyways, my sister got one for xmas and decided to debox it. I never deboxed mine because I have a funny feeling that they will be recalled. So, they crash everywhere, and if they fall on you, they hurt! I got cuts all over my hands because it crashed into me. That wasnt a big deal because it takes a while to control a flutterbye. This morning though, my sister was playing with her fairy, and it flew torwards my head, and my hair got stuck in it, and we had to cut it.  These dolls are horrible. Dont buy them unless you are going to keep them in their boxes.

Yikes. Well, I could have predicted that. Aren't they pretty much just electric powered sky dancers? Why did anyone approve these things as safe when the sky dancers were recalled because of the hundreds of injuries they caused.

The Sky Dancers worked a little different than these. Those were only dangerous if you launched them any way but straight up. The original ones lacked any kind of safety mechanism to prevent them being launched in any direction but up so they got recalled. They got brought back a few years ago with a new safety mechanism so they only launched upright but they didn't catch on like the originals. The Flutterbyes are more like those toy helicopters that are really popular with boys. I'm surprised they didn't come with a ton of warnings what not to do. That reminds me of when Zhuzhu pets came out kids would put them near their hair and it would get caught in the wheels so they had to put a warning to keep away from hair.

Yup!

I bought one of these for my youngest daughter, as she is obsessed with flying dolls ( but knowing they don't exist really) I thought it would be perfect, even though I too thought it took a hell of a lot of batteries!

Anyway cue Christmas morning and a very disappointed little girl  first the doll wouldn't charge...and then when it did, it just would not launch.

I was very annoyed as this doll cost £35 here ($55)!

Anyway I took it back and the customer services guy at TRU told me that a load of these dolls had been returned for other reasons such as injury, uncontrollable flying etc etc.

Luckily there was something else my daughter wanted in exchange but I know now not to buy such a gimmicky thing ever again!
Thanks to SDS for my siggy and avi

I saw 3 of these dolls at my local Goodwill on Friday, lol. Two came with their boxes, but they had clearly been taken out and played with. Not even for the $3 they were charging for them would I have considered buying one after seeing this thread.

I work at a TRU, and we had plenty of returns as well. They were definitely gimmicky, definitely not very functional (that's how a lot of RC flying type stuff is though).
