Can you seal with Decou-page?
« on: December 12, 2013, 12:50:40 PM »
So, I bought Americana decou-page from my local Michael's, thinking "well it's matte and SAYS sealer and finish..."

now, I did check out the tutorials, and it says nothing about not being able to seal with decou-page..... I wanted to know if anyone else has used it/how it's worked out for them?
For anyone who might only be able to recognize the label (I'm guilty of this ) here is what it looks like

I have never used it, but I know sometimes the chemical make up of some sealants are different than others and don't always work as well. Both Testors and Mod Podge are always good choices and come in both matte and glossy finishes. I do hope this ends up working for you, if not though hopefully you can return it and find what you do need.

Best of luck!

I've used Plaid brand decoupage the same as the Mod Podge. I didn't notice much difference.  It does still need to be thinned.  You could always try it on a fakie or test pony first...=]

I would assume that, like kayveryn said, it would be just like using Mod Podge; but I've never tried it myself.
Please let us know how it goes if you do use it. I'm curious now. ^_^

If you want your custom to last, I wouldn't recommend using that. It says "glue" there, and yes same with modge podge, and yes both are a kind of "finish" but it's misleading to call it  a sealant. Glue finishes don't protect custom ponies for long. It's more for simple crafts or an intermediate layer. Example is your paintwork may be fragile, so you seal it with a glue finish first, but make sure you come back and seal it with a more permanent sealant once the work dries and is ready for proper sealing.

The problem with glue is that 1) your paintwork will still chip and 2) it is NOT waterproof, and 3) Glue melts and yellow in harsher and more humid climates. It's very sad. I've had modge podge on my ponies before, and since I live in a tropical country, the paintwork deteriorated quite a bit within just a month before I found out what to do.

What you need is a "polyurethane" matte sealant. That dries as a layer of plastic and is waterproof. Just make sure if you have fan or air-con making it dry fast while you coat thinly. Polyurethane isn't 100% either and it can crack through the ages, but so far most of my painted ponies are in happy condition, and I have already washed them several times. They also definitely last a lot better than a glue finish.

Hope this helps!

Can you recommend a brand of polyurethane sealant? I'd like to try this. I haven't had any problems with my Mod Podge sealed ponies, but I also treat them like porcelain once they're sealed 'cause I'm so afraid of them chipping.
