Current claw games are no different than slot machines. They're programmed to release a prize at certain intervals, and that's if you grab one at the right time. I've grabbed stuff perfectly before, and the claw just slips off it.
So I don't even mess with them anymore.
Not how it used to be. Back in the 80's a convienence store here had an original Bear Claw game (first a single, then a double). Aside from being able to adjust the clamping force, there was no way to rig them, it was pure skill. Me and my mom were masters of it. What we'd do is one of us would play it, while the other "spotted" from the side since it was often hard to judge distance from the front. There was one point it got low enough that we cleaned it out.
Not long after that the gaming company got rid of it, and the clerk of the store (who loved watching us play) started a petition to get it back, and it worked. It was there until the place changed hands.
Miss being able to do that. I'd like to buy one of those older claw machines (I've got a toy one that works with blind bag ponies). I still have trash bags full of toys from then, but the best item is this mug we won one time. Kind of a trophy:
