Hair Care?
« on: December 01, 2013, 10:45:35 AM »
Ok, so I need info on working with pony hair on all versions? Cleaning, straitening, dealing with frizz, curling etc.   What tools? Methods?

Thanks

Its a pretty wide area to cover to be honest :) Do you have some initial questions rather than something as wide ranging as all hair care.

If you have specific queries you should get lots of tips on the different methods people use to clean, recover, maintain and style pony hair :)

You dont need a lot of tools on hand to cover pretty much everything you will come over; conditioner, detangler, baby oil, kitchen roll, foam rollers, a flat iron/straightener and a nice wide tooth metal comb pretty much cover me for everything I need. Most of those are not always applicable and sometimes you will need something extra but that should cover you for most situations [drop the curlers if you dont ever want to curl].

what kind of detangler? Brand? How much to use?

What kind of foam rollers? Flat iron?

Thanks, but website is all jumbled and words, sentences are overlapped, which makes it unreadable.   Strange.

Thats odd on the website - it works fine for me; what browser are you using?

As for the questions...sorry I am not in the US unfortunately [thank you to ponylady for my UK to US translation on some of the items :P]

I guess I am looking for what kind conditioner, how much to use, do I be careful to keep water out of pony.
Any kind :) I like a standard cheap conditioner - I don't aim for any particular brand as long as its for dry hair. Also use conditioner on the hair over shampoo or at least use it before using shampoo - use the shampoo to wash the hair after the conditioner has been in place. I also love to use straight out coconut oil as a conditioner alternative - I find it works amazing on nylon hair probably better than any conditioner. You can also do a conditioner soak in order to help particularly poor hair; lather the hair with conditioner and wrap the hair in saran wrap for 24 hours and then wash out.
Personally I prefer to not get water in a pony - for me its not worth the risk of a pony with a washer developing rust or some other nasty condition inside.

what kind of detangler? Brand? How much to use?
Again any standard detangler will work and just use the same amount you would normally use on your own hair.

What kind of foam rollers? Flat iron?
Ideally you want a flat iron which has a controllable temperature in order that you can use a minimum setting. I also like to use a travel flat iron because it has a smaller surface area and, for me, is a little easier to work with on small ponies. Foam rollers - again any kind a chemist/pharmacy stocks - you can use things like straws and bobby pins or even tinfoil as alternatives for curling.

Baby oil, why would I use this?
It great for detangling as well as adding a shiny finish to pony hair.

What is a kitchen roller?
Sorry I meant kitchen roll - thats a British thing :P By that I mean, paper towels. They are good for securing pony manes and tails in place in order to get that smooth finish.

Is there a blog somewhere with any pics of steps etc?
The website linked to is the best restoration page out there. If you look through the Arena you will find a wide range of threads on pony styling and hair and tutorials.
