Artists: When do you sign your work?
« on: December 02, 2013, 04:26:13 AM »
Okay, this seems silly - this doesn't pertain to CUSTOM ponies, as, I really feel that anything completely customized should have an artist signature on it... unfortunately, I know sometimes we all forget to sign our work, I have a lovely custom here with no signature that really bugs me, as I love to make sure I know WHO did it so I can think of them and their skills when I look at the custom.

ANYWAY, what about other things you do to ponies...

I always sign my rehairs - and I really want anyone I get rehairs from to do the same. But those are ALTERNATE rehairs. What if you just replaced a pony's hair with original colors but it's rehaired, would you sign that? What about a deflock? I mark them as deflocked, but would you sign it? A symbol touch up or little modification? Do you sign it then?

I just want to hear what you guys do, what's "proper" per say- I would hate to mark up a pony (even if it's on the bottom of it's foot) if it really didn't warrant a "signature"...

Also yes I realize I'm being generous calling myself an Artist when just referring to alternate rehairs or deflocks, but, those are the only skills I have, lol. I do not genuinely believe I'm an "artist".

I sign all of the ponies that I do, whether it's a full blown custom, alternate rehair or just replacing some missing plugs.

So I put my name, I used to sign P.Hills, now I sign it MikeysGrrrl. I date it (just the year) and if it's a rehair I note that it's been rehaired.

You're an artist, I think it takes skills to do rehairs as lovely as yours, and although I've never deflocked a pony, I've heard it's quite a pain in the butt :P

Oops, I sign all my customs but I haven't signed any of my recent rehairs. Didn't even cross my mind.

I sign all of my actual customs with a "Kat" ( >^..^< ) symbol on the bottom of one hoof and the year on another.  Sometimes, if I've named the pony, I'll paint that on the bottom of a third hoof.  I've never done any alternate rehairs, so I can't answer that, but I can say that for my normal rehairs, I've always done it for restoration purposes and up until now wouldn't dream of signing something that I was trying to return to as close to factory as possible.  I say up until now because MikeysGrrrl brought up a pretty good point - she notes that it's been rehaired.  I'm personally not a picky enough collector to let that sort of thing bother me, but some collectors are.... hmmm...

I sign customs, alt rehairs, and restorations (I"ve done 2 that were full rehairs to original, plus some touch ups)

piggyback question - I haven't signed my ss alt rehair yet b/c I'm not sure how I should...normally I use paint...but there's flocking there...any ideas?

I have not done much except for alternate re-hairs but I always sign them with "himmie rehair" inside their neck plug.

Himmie, that's a neat way of signing without really taking away the value from the pony.

The reason I sign and note rehairs is because of threads that I've seen pop up in the short time that I've been a member where someone was upset that they bought a pony that was rehaired and they weren't told. Ponies change hands often so it's possible that my rehair that I plan on keeping could be in someone else's collection in 5+ years and it's good for that person to know if they plan on trading or selling it in the future.

I know most of us can tell the difference between original and rehairs, but not everyone can, so I would just rather be safe than sorry :) I just do it in acrylic paint.

I don't know how you would mark a pony with flocking, unless you did was Himmie does, which seems like a great alternative :)

I mark my sea ponies and stuff like that inside the neck, I suppose I don't mark them "rehair" - I just mark "By: Sunshine" and have intermittently been putting the year on the feet... I like my names on the bottom of the feet, I'm not really worried about taking value away - since no one I've ever met has been so picky that a mark on the bottom of the foot would ruin a pony for them - but, I don't mark them as rehairs...

If I rehaired a SS I'd just sign it in the neck as well... everything else though, I sign on the feet.

I have no artistic skills whatsoever! I can say from the rehair perspective I don't sign my name. Alternate or original I typically just do the RH on them (granted I missed a few a while back because I just forgot).  >_<

I sign all my ponies with "Duster" and my ponysona's pen tool cutie mark. Blind bags just have a "D" under the hoof.

Artwork I always sign when done with text. My handwriting is horrible.
