Marking ponies
« on: November 09, 2013, 02:19:46 AM »
Alright don't panic! I just have a quick question.

Normally when I rehair a pony I mark with one of those thin permanent marker pens on the hooves.

The other day while looking through ponies I realized I've somehow made small armies of some of my childhood ponies. I want to put initials on my childhood guys since I don't plan to get rid of them and worry someday I might have trouble telling one apart from the other.  I was going to do the obvious thing and write my initials  on the hooves.  Should I just use the small pen I have or something else? I want it to be permanent, but I'm not big on the bleeding factor that seems to happen with perm markers over time. Is there a better type of marker to use?

Also no I'm not going to put tags on them or do any other sort of system to identify. I'm marking those hooves and just want suggestions for the best type of pen, marker whatever to put on there. No saving these little pony hoofies.  :P

Perhaps you could use a paint pen? Instead of staining the plastic it should just apply paint over the plastic, like most paint, but should also be easy to write with.

They are your ponies honey :) You should not have to worry about explaining the why of it.

If it absolutely has to be pen, I would initially agree with a fine tip marker as you would with a rehair or custom. However, if it was me I would skip the pen and use something which will stay on but will also be easy to remove as well as not leave a stain. A white out pen or even a light paint would work better.

I know you say pen, but all I can think about is bleeding. I imagine all ink will bleed after time. Otherwise I think one of those paint pens might work.

What about carving your initials with an exacto blade?
(Don't ask me why taking a chunk out of plastic is better than bleeding ink.  :brow: just throwing it out there)

Haha, well I started not to throw the end part in there. I just notice lots of these threads turn into a "why you shouldn't write on your pony". I just wanted to clearly throw it out there to avoid that because they are getting marked on.

Yeah see I do worry about the bleeding only because I don't want to mark on them for nothing an the words be hard to see. I don't think I could bring myself to carve into them. Oh goodness. A paint pen doesn't sound bad I'll look for one of those. Many thanks!

Acrylic paint with a fine brush might be neat too! There's more color range than with paint pens, so you can find your favorite color. :D

To mark your own ponies I'd go with the paint - they will be instantly recognisable and it's also removable.

It's not that I'm against initials on the bottom of hooves, it's just not something I would do to my own.

What about a paint pen in the same color as the pony?  You might have to look closely, but it would be visible.  If any of the pigment bled into the pony, it wouldn't be very noticeable (in theory).

I have bought custom ponies etc. with the ID of the customizer done pn one hoof neatly in an obviously very fine black pen. They haven't "bled" and are clear and readable.
An other idea?  Nail polish (if you want your whole name etc.) in your favourite colour - perhaps just one letter? THAT could even be removed and certainly shouldn't bleed on ane hoff?
Just a thought!
