A question for customizers
« on: October 23, 2013, 03:42:20 PM »
Hey there. I have a question for all the customizers on here.

This is my pony, Acidic 70's. He's from the internet game, Ponyisland.

For the longest time I've been wanting him to be made into a custom, but by someone else who is far more skilled than I am.
I'd want him to look almost exactly as his PI picture does, symbols painted on and all, and made with either a G1 or a G3 body.
How much would you guys think to charge for this? I'm looking into finding someone who can do it, but first I have to know how much it'd be.

Thanks guys.

Different artists have different commission rates. The complexity of the design affects the price, of course, but it's not the only factor in pricing, as you will see if you compare the pricing details in the Commission Artist thread linked above. :)

Anyway, I'd say yours is pretty complex involving more than one pair of wings and possibly other additional sculpting - would you like the ruffles sculpted, too? Or just fetlocks? I don't know if other customizers have more efficient wing sculpting methods than I do, but personally I would place the pony somewhere at the "heavily sculpted / complex design" range, i.e. the most expensive, mainly due to the wings (if it's large/realistic bird wings you're looking for). Maybe at the starting end of that price range though since the paintjob looks pretty straightforward, there's only one main colour for the body.

I'm sorry I can't help more than that as I'm taking a break from customizing and have a full waiting list anyway. He looks like a fun character to make, though, and I hope you find an artist who can bring him to life for you!

as fuzzy as he is, i would rather recommend comission a plushie instead of a pony custom. ;)

Gorgeous mountie!  :)

I've been thinking about trying a custom of one of my mountie girls, particularly one of the first two girls here: http://ponyisland.net/index.php?src=pets&sub=enclosure&enclosure=1  and I've been trying to figure out the least labor intensive method of doing the wings.

How expensive the custom becomes depends entirely on how much detail you want to go into.  Now your boy has a one basic body color, so the full body repaint could be done quite quickly with an airbrush, but then the tattoos that he has are quite involved which adds more time and therefore higher cost.

Then there is the mountie "fuzz" as emuel mentioned.  Were you thinking of trying to duplicate the fuzzy effect as well?  Or would you be happy with a smooth body?

Mounties have very full hair - would you want nylon MLP hair with extra plugs added for more fullness?  or would a rehair with brushed out yarn accomplish what you are looking for?  or would you prefer to just skip the fullness of the hair completely and go with a regular amount of G1 or G3 hair?

I'd be happy to discuss it further with you via pm if you'd like.  :)

Thanks for the help, everyone! And kind compliments. Acidic is feeling quite loved xD

I guess I wasn't very descriptive. I wouldn't want full body fluff all over him, just on his hooves and maybe a little bit of chest fur. As for his hair, I'd be perfectly happy with a regular amount of MLP hair, though brushed out yarn does sound very cool. And then the wings, which I would like sculpted as he's posed, two spread out and two folded. And then his symbol on one side.
So I wasn't looking for an insane amount of sculpting or all this crazy, fancy stuff. xD I'd probably make him myself if I weren't afraid I'd totally ruin him by trying to paint his symbol on. That's the real reason I'm looking into buying a custom.

Thanks again for the tips/help/compliments ^.^

Unfortunately it will probably be pretty pricey, 4 sculpted wings will be an extensive sculpt in and of themselves.  I agree with the above anywhere from $80-200 depending on who you want. If you'd like to try it yourself there are some great tutorials floating around. :)
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.

Here is a thread on PI that lays out the customization of the mountie Muse for one of the mods Sunneh:  http://www.ponyisland.net/index.php?src=forum&sub=replies&forum=18&topic=2892882

Lots of awesome info there and this is what I've been planning to build off of when I try my hand at my own mounties.  :)

I think I'd skip the resin for the wings though and go with either apoxie clay or polymer clay...knowing me, I'd burn myself multiple times and still end up with a mess!

Thank you! I decided earlier that I would bite the bullet and try to make him myself. I haven't made a pony in a while so not only would it be fun, I'd get some practice. I'll practice painting his symbol before I actually put it on him.
