US person paid in Canadian on Paypal- do I accept?
« on: October 22, 2013, 10:06:11 AM »
  Hi all,

I just sold a pony to a lovely arena member who paid in Canadian dollars via Paypal, which Paypal wants me to accept or deny.   I'm not sure what to do- can/will Paypal convert it to USD for me?  Also, is the exchange rate even? Otherwise the price probably isn't correct!

       Thanks for your help  :)

I'm not sure about Paypal converting it but the exchange rate isn't even, I know that. It's not super far off, but def. not even. :/

This has happened to me a few times :) It depends on the discussion with the particular person whether or not i accept or deny. If it's been stated clearly that the price is American (USD) then i'll deny and just send the person a polite note about it. If the dollar type was ambiguous, i eat it and just accept.

Was your listing in CAD? Because I'm in Canada and I only pay with paypal and when I send money it get's sent in whatever currency the item was listed in. I don't get a choice, it's automatically done for me.

Paypal should convert the funds for you, however CAD is worth less that USD, so unless it's a higher dollar amount it's not going to be an equal amount. I would suggest contacting paypal, they would be able to answer your questions in a more informed manner since they can see your account, the transaction in question etc.

Yikes, that is sorta a sticky situation. Yes, they will convert it for you but if you accept it there is going to be an exchange rate, I believe it is around 2.9% +.30, I could be wrong on the exact amount. But you are going to be charged regardless.

I would perhaps message them and explain the exchange rate and ask if they can pay you in US dollars.

if you log into paypal go to 'my account', overview.. there is a button next to how much money you have in your account saying currency converter.. that will do the conversion for you but it doesn't help much for the moment as you need money in your account first.

There is a couple of cents different in the exchange rate, on xe it $1 canadian dollar is .97 us cents so it would properly be more like $1 being equal to .95 us cents

The buyer could have sent the payment in the wrong currency by mistake, I know I have done it a few times but once I realized what I had done I paid the difference straight away

She actually sent more than was necessary, as I was able to ship cheaper than expected, so I'm not worried about that.  I'm just going to message her and she if she can change it on her end.

Does it cost you to send money in a different currency? I don't want this to cost her money, and I'd like to refund her the shipping difference once we have this sorted out.
