What shampoo to use on G1 colored tinsel?
« on: October 18, 2013, 09:53:35 AM »
I shampoed my childhood stargazer and it took all of the purple off the tinsel. The tinsel is now just silver. It was either pantene or garnie fructis shampoo.
I have some more G1`s with colored tinsel and am afraid to shampoo them.
I think that my mom soaked stargazer in bleach at some point, but the color was still there until i shampoed it.

Has anyone else had this problem? I bought a bottle of VO5 shampoo just for my ponies and am wondering if its safe to use on colored tinsel?

Oh wow. I had no idea shampoo was harsh enough to harm colored tinsel, but then again, I almost never shampoo pony hair, just condition. :( That's really useful to know.

Hmm, I personally just due Dial antibacterial soap and Panteve Pro-V conditioner on all of my ponies and have never had a problem with tinsel losing it's color. I'm speculating that it was probably the bleach that was the culprit. It may not have stripped the color right away, but may have loosened it so it became susceptible to a gentle shampooing. This is just a theory, but I've never heard of shampoo stripping tinsel color before. :/

Im hoping that it was the bleach. But im not 100% sure that mom bleached that particular pony.

If the pony was bleached, perhaps that loosened the color, and then shampooing it sort of "finished the job?"

Weird, I've NEVER heard of this.  I'm with everyone else, it probably wasn't the shampoo.  If you don't know which ponies might have been bleached in the past, try washing a small spot on one strand of tinsel as a test before washing all the hair.

I don't think I've heard of bleach hurting tinsel before either, but it makes sense . . .

I don't even use shampoo on my OWN hair*. It's too harsh and strips away all of the natural oils on the follicles. Imagine what those chemicals to do synthetic pony hair! If the pony hair is really dirty (for example I was given a box of ponies covered in mouse poop and pee) then I use gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand soap and I never let the soap soak in the hair. It's massaged gently into the hair and rinsed after a few seconds.

I only condition my pony hair (and my hair, too) with moisturizing conditioner preferably with silicones like dimethicone in it. The silicones detangle and add shininess to hair. If the hair is really rough, I'll boil it for a couple seconds to melt and soften the strands.

*The only time I put shampoo in my hair is at most once a week and only if it gets dirty from being around horses. My mare likes to groom me and rub her nose in my hair and lick my ponytail, so eventually I have to wash it because gross lol

I love ponies with tinsel and I have washed all of them with different kinds of shampoo - and this has never happend to me. I know for sure bleach/oxy or anything similar can hurt the tinsel, but i've never had any problems with shampoo.

I've also heard people of using baby shampoo. It's supposed to be very gentle and mild. If you do find that it was the shampoo that stripped the color, I'd try switching to a baby shampoo brand like Johnson & Johnson's. It might help. :)

As Sandra mentions, I use a baby shampoo because its nice and mild. But over the years I have used other shampoos on different ponies including those with tinsel and have never heard of the surface of the tinsel being removed.

I am going to second that it seems unlikely the shampoo is the culprit and the bleach is the reason the colour perhaps rinsed off. Its possible it would have come off as soon as the pony was in water never mind just shampoo.
