Eep horse auction! Advice!
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:47:49 AM »
Blah, to keep things short and sweet due to some reason drama having to sell my riding horse. I have four but ok my mare is a broodmare, my old barrel horse is retired and cold backed to boot (I'm too old to do that anymore I'd probably come out of the saddle this time), and my other horse is the young one I'm training that we're going baby steps here. I've been messing with my big draftxpaint gelding I've had since he was five (now he's 15), but my dad managed to hurt himself about two and a half weeks ago with him. To avoid more stupidity in that department and my dad from busting himself up with the gelding finding him a new home is easier. Kinda leaves me horseless in the riding department though.

There is a horse auction this weekend and normally I do not go to auctions. Most of our horses came from breeders or people we knew pretty well. The only occasions our horses came from auctions were when we bought an ex police horse or prison horse ect because they tend to be very well trained. Well I take that back like anything not all of them are, but at least here they have to disclose all faults with the animal (such as the horse bites, bucks, has health issues ect). There just happens to be a sale this weekend with a horse that fits what I'm looking for currently in just a kinda easy going trail riding horse till I get my young gelding going better in the saddle. I've never really went to an animal auction though as an adult buying my own animal. I've got a cap for myself that I think is reasonable if the mare seems suitable when I go to look at her in the morning (they have it set up where you can go early in the mornings and ride the horses which is nice). She might go over my cap, but I thought "eh might as well try?"

Those of you that have gone to some auctions what are things to keep in mind about the auction itself? I know what to look for with the horse, but gosh I've never even bid on a horse for myself. I'm not sure how all that goes..any experienced auction people?

Here are some suggestions...try to see the horse in its stall prior to it being up for auction. They're used to being in stalls...not so much a noisy auction arena. You may get a better idea of temperament, plus you can see if you have that "spark" that's so needed in the long partneership you'lll share!
If there's a way to get to the auction hall early, then by all means, GO!! You may be able to watch them as they come off their transports...then you'll see the trouble makers :)
I hope this helps out a bit, and remember...just because you're shopping it doesn't mean you have to buy (though t wouuld be nice)

Lol thanks, but I was kinda more curious about the auction process. I've picked out horses for people at auctions I know what to do there.

Remember some are there because something is wrong. Friend used to go to sugar creek (occasionally new holland)and there were health issues from eye problems to navicular. Behavior issues get dumped there to. But there are also some great horses that just end up there.

Expect the worse. Have a plan for what to do if it doesn't work out. Do they ride them in at your auction? Know what signs to look for in a drugged horse. Take a friend that's gone before if possible.

There are usually a lot of people like my friend who will buy and have them evaluated and then work with them a bit and resell. Some may be doing it just to flip them and others care like she did. If you don't feel comfortable find someone like that. Watch out for the ones that will continue to drug and sell!

It's fun getting a new horse but getting there can be awful. I despise horse shopping. Everyone turns into a liar.

I've never been to an auction, but I've been thinking about it, so I'm stalking for advice rather than offering any. But how exciting! And how incredibly awesome that you get the opportunity to ride the horses before bidding. That seems unusual, but fantastic! Good luck!!

Guys lol you're giving me advice on things I specifically said I didn't need advice on. I know how to check a horse.

Also as I stated it was a correction facility horse sale (prison raised an used horses). I'm not sure the technicalities of it, but they legally cannot avoid disclosing information. They have to tell you why that horse is being sold and what issues are wrong with it. The same applies to horses used by the police department. I'm not sure if it's done everywhere other than my state, but they wouldn't sell a horse that is drugged up ect. They have to be honest even in the brochures they listed things "horses has been foundered, horse is cold backed, horse will rear and roll on rider ect"

Those issue that most horse sales have don't happen here. I had picked on that her biggest thing was she was an older horse. They also sell horses once they reach a certain age.

Ah well thanks or the attempts to be helpful, didn't matter. I couldn't go, and since I couldn't I had someone look for me but the mare was out of my budget. End of story till next year, but I'll probably find a horse before next years sale.
