Are Fan-Dubbed Names Taking Over, and is this damaging fandom? (light hearted!)

I think it's mostly annoying when they switch. I like that they changed Lyra to, well, Lyra, because I really liked that one. But they officially named Dr. Hooves "Time Turner" and now there's apparently a set of blind bags coming out with him where he's Dr. Hooves, and it's just getting confusing.

I think it's because (though don't hold me on this) they themselves wanted to go with the fanon name "Dr Whooves" (that's how it was spelled originally), but knew they couldn't due to copyright, so they chose a random, but fitting name, so they could release him.  This can be inferred by the fact that there are Dr Who allusions on Time Turner's toys, but none of them come right out and say "Yes, this is Dr Who as a pony, like the fans thought."

If this is the case, maybe "Dr Hooves" is actually different enough to get past the copyright, and they only recently realized that?

I like the fan names. At first it bugged me that controversial G4 muffin/bubbles pony is officially nameless now, but now I think it's kind of cool.

I'm always going to go with the name we can't use here, since it will always mean "Playfully silly" to me, always did, always will.

This is not a request to get the ban on her name lifted, I respect the rules.

If I may, I would like to take the chance to ask one question: where did Sweetie Drops, Time Turner and Vinyl Scratch come from? There's a few second fan names that showed up after the first ones.

Sweetie Drops and Time Turner are the "real" names, not the fanon names.  The fans called those ponies "Bon Bon" and "Dr Whooves" respectully (Bon Bon was named as a tribute to the Tales version).

I'm not sure if "Vynyl Scratch" is a fan name or official.  I know that she was called "DJ Pon3" in Eqestria Girls (the song, not the movie), and when I was new-ish to the fandom, I watched a video that had two guys talking about episodes, and they mentioned DJ Pon3, and said something like "They're calling her Vynyl Scratch now." at the time I thought that the "they" in that sentance referred to Hasbro, but looking back it could have easily meant the fandom.

Personally, I'm not a fan of most of the fan names.  It does seem like they're taking over when it comes to non-main characters.  A lot of them seem terribly uninventive.

I'm also dissapointed that they started to use the term "alicorn" because of the fandom. The show makers called them pegacorns before that.

I'm also not a fan of the term used in the show. I even refuse to say it on VoU. I've always called that species winged unicorns (mainly because of a book I had.. Whisper the Winged Unicorn... it was actually "Whisper the winged unicorn in Whisper's lonely heart" that got me calling them that but I'm sure that is what I would have called them even before the book . I wonder if I still have that book somewhere >.>;;

I had a couple of those books and the plush, too!

On topic,  I don't mind that there are fan names just so long as everyone is respectful and doesn't bash or otherwise whine if another fan or even Hasbro decides to go with a different name than the one that is popular in fanon.

Alicorn, Winged Unicorn, Pegacorn...They all end with corn, and we all love corn, don't we? 

Sorry, some of us know that originally "alicorn" means "the horn of a unicorn/ the substance a unicorn horn is made of". It had nothing to do with winged unicorns untill some modern fantasy writer popped up.
