I feel like I should clarify, I didn't mean to say that resin ponies shouldn't be so expensive! XD I don't know if my comment came off this way or not but JUST IN CASE everything Tiella and Flarewing have said, especially concerning expenses, is true :D

also their casts are really good (it is really hard sometimes to get a bubble-less cast) and some of the coolest things I have ever seen in my life and MOST DEFINITELY worth every penny they charge.

I just am so awkward and put my foot in my mouth far too often and I hope I didn't offend anyone and aaahhhhhhhhhhh

We never took your words to mean that, Zaphy. I posted what I did as a cautionary to those who don't have the disposable income to cover the costs.

While this photo tutorial simplifies things a bit, it does show the process of mold making for anyone who wants to get an idea at what they are looking at process wise.  Lots of folks cast their own original art in other hobbies, so there are many more tutorials out there that are more detailed.

Wow, really labor intensive. I got stuck on air vents placed strategically to prevent bubbles...I would have no clue where bubbles might occur.8-/

I still don't have a clear understanding what resin is :s I thought it was that stuff made to make clear, see through ponies that customizers add glitter to.

There are several types of resin. One type is the clear stuff that Tiella and I make ponies out of. There are other types that are used for models like cars and airplanes, and even more types used in crafting those several-hundred-dollar ball joint dolls.

Most model horse resins are done out of white resin which can be primed and painted.  So yeah many types.

The bubbles occur from the pouring of the resin and can also occur when mixing it.  Pouring slowly and from a high height will usually reduce the amount of bubbles.

Ahh, gotcha! Thanks for the info! Such an interesting process and a lot of work I'd imagine. The end results are gorgeous though Tiella and FW! Could not believe the G1s you've done-amazing!

If you want to see some more types of resins the model horse hobby has a whole resin directory of original works that artist have cast.  Check it out if you have some time some day.  http://www.equineresindirectory.com/

Thanks for sharing this guys. I never thought of or heard of resin ponies before. I collect resin bjds and so I am  much more comfortable with resin and working on resin than vinyl. I might have to give this a try...someday. I have too many other projects and not enough space atm. I'm going to have to check out all your pretty resin ponies now. ^_^

I'm assuming they'd be easy (well not easy, but I hope you know what I mean) enough to customize. With resin dolls, the idea is that you can wipe and repaint the doll as often as you'd like (applying proper sealant of course). I kind of like this idea. It's one of the things I like most about painting dolls. Hair would be difficult I imagine, as there aren't exactly doll wigs for ponies. Those of you that make resin ponies: would you be able to root their hair? Or is sculpting it on the only choice? (Sorry for the dumb question. I'm looking at resin ponies as we speak.)

I know Tiella roots her hair in with plugs, I'm assuming she uses the reroot tool somehow? But I'm not entirely sure, you'd have to ask her. I have one mold that I made intending to root it with nylon hair rather than sculpting and it works pretty well, I just kind of made like a trench and then I use DeeKary's method here to root the hair in. :)
