I have, and it does NOT behave the way that nylon does.  I don't know if it's because it's thicker or the difference between what it's made of or what, but it has the terrible tendency to want to kind of stand up for the first five inches or so then make a crazy huge arc after that.  I have not had any luck trying to tame it once it's on, either.  Sorry, no pics, though.

I once saw a really nice piece that had a real horse hair tail but a matching nylon mane.

I can't even imagine it working to use it for the mane.

Along with it not behaving, it's not 'to scale'. It would be like if your real horse's hair had spaghetti-thick strands of hair. I think mohair/lambswool would be your best bet to make it look natural and to scale.

I was just curious because I have real horses and wondered what real horse hair would look like on a pony.
Thanks

Not amazing - I have done one and used some mane for mane (as I won't cut a tail sized amount) and it insists on standing up. But the sentimental value in that pony far outweighs the styling issue. :)

I was going to say a similar thing as far as sentimental value is concerned. I've seen a few that have used real horse hair and to be honest, it doesn't really work. It seems to be very untameable. But if it's a special custom (say, based on your own horse), I think from a sentimental point of view using his/her real hair might work out. But in general, it doesn't tend to look right on MLP's sadly.
Sorry to hijack your thread Epona, but... Is that your RL horse in your avatar, DaffyDilly? He's so beautiful!  :lovey:

My sister RedWildFlower recently did a custom of our friend's horse for her birthday. She used some of his hair for the tail and used nylon for the mane. Horsehair is super stiff, so it won't just lay over to one side for a nice mane. It's a great idea for a keepsake though.

I happen to have a picture here

It can be tamed, but it requires some processing.  I have more than a few dolls with horsehair wigs, as it was a popular ( and cheap ) material to use for wigs in the 1920's - 1940's.  Mohair was reserved for the more expensive models, but the lower end varieties all had horsehair.  It tames pretty easily, but you can't exactly brush it the way it's sewn into the wig cap.

Thanks everyone. I might make up one for myself as a keepsake from my horses.
