A restoration in progress
« on: August 12, 2013, 03:54:52 PM »
(I am not sure where to put restoration stuff, so sorry in advance mods!)

Just started working on my next project now that I finished my G3 Custom Gusty.

Fixing up a G1 Italian Lickety Split. It is my only Nirvana, so I figured it would be worth it. Any tips to help this newbie on repainting the symbols/eyes for this newbie?

I'd keep her as she is, aside from cleaning her up & removing any marks. Part of the charm Italians have for me is the wonky stamped eyes! If you're not going to sell her though and are determined to repaint, use artist grade acrylics like Golden brand. They have lots of pigments and go on smooth, so you don't end up with multiple layers of paint that can look streaky or lumpy. She's lovely, have fun with her :)

Part of the terrible painting job is what makes her a Nirvana - especially if she still has original hair.    I wouldn't change  a thing about her!

There is actually a lot of scuff marks and scratches that I do not think show up on the pictures. she is missing a good part of her eye due to a scuff, so would you leave that alone? I am redoing the hair as it was faded/fading, but figured that would be good to do to give her her original look.

Her symbols look nice. You could repink her mane. As for her eye, a quick touch up and seal with matte mod podge would work well...

I would probably suggest customs will get you more help on how to fix up eyes and symbols, so I am going to pop this there.

I would leave her alone too. Restoration will devalue her. :( If you do end up restoring her it would be awesome to mark the bottom of her feet in case somewhere down the line you decide to trade or sell her.

Hmm ok, well if anything I plan to rehair her as her forelock was cut and her mane is faded. I do not think I will sell her, as it is so hard for me to get any g1s, but will mark her just in that case. I was not sure about repainting her symbols as they looked pretty good. It was just her one eye that was scuffed pretty bad and the purple mark above the other eye I am going to try and sunfade...hope I did not start a faux pas...

No No, she is your pony and you do what you want with her! If you to want to touch up her eye/ symbols use acrylic paint (I recommend now for restores Montana acrylic pain pens-they match the original paint so much better) in VERY THIN layers and then a thin layer of sealant over.

I guess it's just knowing the value of nirvanas and knowing most collectors would prefer them with haircuts or completely bald vs/ rehair we wanted to make sure you knew that before getting to deep into it ;)
