Customizing brush n grow pony

I have Curly Locks which is in bad shape, and I'm wondering how hard it would be to customize. I've never worked with mechanism ponies. I would like to have the mechanism taken out without breaking it. Have anyone here worked with Brush n Grow ponies?

Any tips? Tutorials? Or even the customs to show?
