Restoring glitter symbols?
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:32:12 AM »
I have a few G1 ponies I'd like to restore, but I have no idea how to go about restoring the glitter symbols some of them have.

I hate, hate, HATE working with regular glitter because it gets everywhere.  Is there any not-super-messy way to do this, like a glitter pen or something?  And what color glitter would work for Gypsy's tambourines, because it's kind of hard to tell.

I would NOT use a glitter pen. They run like crazy! You'll end up with glitter paint all over your pony. I've reglittered a couple ponies. I just paint glue on with a paint brush and then dump glitter on it. If you're worried about making a mess, do it outside. You should see my front porch right now. I put glitter on the poster for my Fair booth! My front porch looks like Pinkie Pie had a sneezing fit! :P

Hahahaha I love that!!

When I re glitter ponies I go to my local stamp art store, they have ultra fine glitter that works awesome. You can also mix two colours to get a different colour that's harder to find. I use a glue pen to put the glue on then I place the pony of a coffee filter then dump the glitter on her rump. Once the glitter is on I let her dry somewhere safe and use the coffee filter to pour the unused glitter back into the jar.

Good luck with your ponies :)

Yes I agree with the above. A fine tip glue pen to fill in the area you want to cover and then ultra fine glitter. And a good way to make it look more authentic is to make sure you have an undercoat of silver glitter when you are adding the relevant colour. If you check out your glitter ponies you ll see that most of them have a silverish undertone to them.

I dont deny its footery, I dont deny it can be time consuming but its also the most effective way to recreate the symbols.

So...what color for Gypsy?  The tambourines have worn off to the point that it's hard to tell what color they're supposed to be.

Also, I noticed Michael's sells acrylic paint with glitter in it--would that work?  Can it be thinned?  (I'm sure you can all tell that I'm terrified of loose glitter at this point.)

Its a tough colour to describe - they are almost a very deep maroon in colour - a purple/red colour with brown through it.

About this, has anyone tried using loose glitter for nails? Shouldn't that be one of the finest glitters around? Or maybe it's hard to find for normal consumers. I have a Powder that I need to touch up the symbols on but I have to get rid of her stinking smell first...

I attempted re-glittering for the first time earlier this year and put up the post below.  I'm hoping it might be of some help to you.  :D

Thanks, y'all!  So, a sort of burgundy-maroon color.  (Definitely taking that picture with me to Michael's!)  Also thanks for everyone's glitter-repaint photos!  This is why I love asking questions on this site. :)  Everyone is always so helpful.

I've had a type of body glitter that's really fine as well.  I just got a craft pack of fine glitter from Michael's I'm going to try out since that's easier to find.  All sorts of colors were available, so I'm hoping to match the ponies fairly well.
