Is this art theft?

I see these ponies everywhere--on necklaces, appliques, stickers, etc--from many different sellers. There's the whole mane six, plus a few others. It's been bothering me.

Did someone take this off some poor artist, and it just caught on? It doesn't look like official art. Does anyone know the origin of the design?

Those hearts are by Bamboodog on Deviantart. They get stolen for Etsy designs all the time.

Unfortunately it is not something new which came along with G4, there has always been varying degrees of art theft thanks to the internet.

My suggestion would be, if you know the source of the art, simply bring it to their attention. Some artists may wish to follow it up and others may simply prefer to let it be. But its always worth letting people know just in case.

sadly I seem to remember this artist posting a journal about how there was nothing they regret more than making those pony hearts because they ARE stolen by everyone for everything.

I have seen people who claim they have asked for permission to use them and credit the artist.  But mostly it's just blatant art theft because there is nothing they can really do to stop it.

Jeez, you'd think people would just draw their own. That way they may be stealing (borrowing?) the idea of sleepy ponies with heart hair, but at least they could say it's their own image.

I recognized that image as soon as I opened this thread. It's such a shame that theft is happening to the artist I guess the only solution is to boycott all products with stolen artwork...

That journal is still on their page. They say in it if someone draws their own it's fine, but most just copy or trace them.

I hate people sometimes. "That is sooooo cute! I can't be bothered drawing, so I'll just take it. It's just a picture from the internet and everyone else does this, so I can't be in the wrong!"
