Cosplaying ponies -with- ponies!
« on: June 22, 2013, 02:55:56 PM »
Or, well, a horse. But he's a smallish horse!

Anyway, some of the barns in this area (including mine) do a yearly 'fun show' where things are more relaxed than they would be at a regular show, and most of them include a costume class at the end of the day - which is right up my alley, because I love sewing and cosplaying! We only use horses who are fairly easygoing and comfortable with the extra gear - we don't force it on young horses who aren't experienced, or horses who are shyer/spookier, etc. (I usually even try to pick the horse who'll be most comfortable with the parts of a given costume, since some will put up with more than others. My regular ride, the little guy down there in my sig, probably would NOT have taken well to today's!)

A few months ago, I realized while rewatching 'Luna Eclipsed' that Luna's guards have dragon-like wings, not regular pegasus wings, and I remembered - "Hey - my best barn friend's horse already has a set of those wings from another costume, and she loves it when I use him! I should do humanized Luna and her pegasus guard this year!" (I may have wanted an excuse to make a Luna-esque outfit, anyway. ^^; )

Soo... After two straight weeks of work (sometimes up to twelve hours a day! X_x ), multiple last-minute disasters, and a panic attack when I found out the horse's owner was not at the show and had not left me the wings (she did come through for me before the class, but not until I'd made a backup set out of posterboard and sharpies I found in the concession stand ^^; ), I would very much like to show you: Princess Lunacake and Joey the Incredibly Tolerant Wonderguard!

(Please excuse his hurty spot - it wasn't caused by the costume, he's just having a really awful time with the gnats this year and he rubbed himself raw trying to scratch before anyone realized he was going to need something more than their regular flyspray. :/ )

His mom was holding him there, but that was just so I could get up and get settled. I am completely functional in that getup!

Except for Joey's wings and my ears/horn, everything there was made at home, by me! That's an Actual Corset, back-lacing, boning, and all, though it was done with costume-grade supplies and not the fancy stuff. I'd wanted to try and get a proper blue wig originally, but I decided the horn was more important - it's just a local show, and it would have taken soo much more time to get into (and I was already doing the headless chicken thing trying to get ready). Most of the horse half of the costume is just posterboard, broadcloth, and various scraps from the scrap box - I had to take a few liberties with style and colour because I was exhausted and only had so much of a budget anyway. >_< But everyone liked it! That's why we came home with this!

wow that is awesome! You look lovely and the horse is adorable :)

I'd love to see some Icelandic "horses" (they are technically ponies :) ) in such attire ^^

Hee, thank you, everypony! This is one of the more complicated costumes I've done, so I'm pretty proud of it! Joey is such a ham, too - When we came back along the rail near the end of the class, he realized people had cameras out, parked himself in front of them, and refused to move! I know he can't really understand about pictures, but he sure does know when people are paying attention to him!

Vintergatan - I haven't been lucky enough to meet an Icelandic pony yet (my regular guy's a Fjord, and we had the most gorgeous Halflinger come in for the show, though!), but I've heard the footfalls of the tolt are pretty similar to what Saddlebreds do when they rack, and Saddlebreds are what most of the horses at my barn (including Joey there) are! I'd love to get a chance to play with one of those fuzzy little things. =D

cadance89 - The little plain ribbons are what my barn gives out for the casual shows, but our formal show ribbons have the rosette at the top and the streamers at the bottom, so they might be similar? It pretty well depends on what a barn likes and where they order them from, and some of them can get kind of crazy! Championship ribbons in particular tend to be huge and multi-coloured. I only found out recently that Canada and the UK apparently both give out red ribbons for first instead of blue!

Yep USA ribbons seem to be very similar to our rosettes except tails for ours are usually attached to the centre at the front rather than to the back. And yes they are indeed red here, though I think the Pony Club and one of the most prestigous showing shows in the year here have blue for 1st :) Blue is usually 2nd place.
Here's one of my UK ones :D
