Vintergaten - Try baking supplies.  It's going to be along with baking soda, as it's part of what makes up baking soda.  It's powdery white and looks like corn starch.  Cream of Tartar is a byproduct of wine production and its scientific name is Potassium bitartrate if that helps at all.

Ok, cool, I'll keep my eyes peeled next time i'm grocery-shopping :) thanks!

Do we have to be careful around symbols, glitter and such?

I'm not sure, I've only tested on Minty and Flutterbye.  I would play it safe with Glitter Symbols, but the more permanent symbols should be fine, but it will take testing, I suppose.  I had to scrub a bit on Minty's symbols and they were fine as can be.

Nice one!

Here is the chemical definition of cream of tartar, should make it easier for anyone to find...

http://chemistry.about.com/od/foodcookingchemistry/a/Cream-Of-Tartar.htm

By the way I saw this stuff for whitening nails the other day, it has bicarb and makes a fizzy HPO solution when you dissolve it. I'm going to try that on poor long suffering Majesty's Ugly Twin, who has become a bit of a lab rat but is still beautiful to me =)

I've tried this on pindot haven't had much luck with it but maybe I'm not scrubbing hard enough --- though it did wonders on tail rust in the hair. It might be better than toothpaste....

Yes, Cream of Tartar will nuke rust.

It may take a bit more elbow grease, and I was using a kitchen scrub brush, which while unwieldly, is a bit more potent in murdering dirt than a toothbrush.

Vintergatan: Did you ever find out what this was in Icelandic? Might be something similar in Norwegian... I'm having trouble finding it...  :wonder:

How does it work on pen marks/highlighter and such? Is it only dirt/rust it will clean off?

Surprisingly, turns out the wiki page MiRaja posted at the top of this page actually has its Icelandic counterpart:
http://is.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%ADnsteinn

It's called Vínsteinn (wine stone), but I see there is a page in Norwegian as well. Unfortunately, the store I went to didn't have it so I'll have to check elsewhere, but now at least I know what to look for :)

also, when I was at the store, I noticed that all the similar baking ingredients were strictly locally made, not imported, which makes me a bit pessimistic since this is made out of grapes, which we don't really have this far north :S Might be tricky to find it in Norway as well.

On pen and highlighter, it's not likely to do much.  It's only mildly acidic and best to break down such marks, so I doubt its effectiveness on stains will do much.  It can be mixed with citruses and stuff to make it more acidic but I would think things like peroxide and such would be more effective.  Cream of tartar is effective because of its fine abrasiveness from what I understand.  It works like an ultra fine sandpaper, as it pulls out the crap without scratching it.  Also murders rust.

If you have any 'ruined' cast iron laying around. . .
