That most likely was when the mold of the pony was made.

They were out in '03 - I was working a TRU when they came out. The date on the foot is when the mold was made - not when the ponies were released -- G1's cause  the same confusion - While the FF and collector ponies are marked '82 they didn't hit the shelves til '83 which is why this is MLP's 30th anniversary - they came out in 1983 -2013 -30 years.

Yea its common for toy companies to work on a toy for a year before its actually released to the public sometimes longer actually.  That means you will see the date being different from the actual release date.  I am just glad they date toys.  Toys that don't have dates make me crazy.

:) Thanks guys.. that actually cleared up my confusion.. and I don't know why I didn't think of that, considering G4 ponies released this year have 2010 hoof stamps lol..

Because they are all time travellers...ponies were time lords way before G4 and Dr Whooves came along. :P

And in seriousness I third or forth the "its the year of mould manufacture" not year of release :)
