I need your help!
« on: June 14, 2013, 05:51:15 AM »
Something happened to my two G3 ponies: Rainbow Dash and Minty. Here they are:
http://i.pixs.ru:/storage/8/5/9/IMG0699JPG_2132400_8207859.jpg
Nothing unusual at first sight, right? But look at that pink dots on their bodies - do you know what is it? And I don't know where are they from, because there's no little children in our home and all ponies "living" in their boxes. Strange thing  Does anyone had the same problem? And yeah, all other ponies in my collection are without those dots.

I'd like to erase them, but how? Could you help me with this, please?

I think i read about it somewhere that it is called regrind?
basically where hasbro recycled plastics, some of the plastics degrade faster than the main plastic and it fades to pink spots. i don't think there's much you can do about it sadly... the site said that sunfading can make the different between the colours greater. sad times

It is sad, but toys do age no matter how hard we try to keep them nice :)

We have a had few get em, sometimes a change in location has helped and sometimes not.  Some of the colors are not as stable as others so they can break down or react.

Big thanks for information! And thanks to kiwimlp, who moved my topic to right place =)
And one more thing - does anybody ever noticed the same dots on G1 ponies? I'm going to buy some, so I'm afraid they'll have those dots too.

I thought regrind is only on G1s? but I guess G3s are slowly getting old enough to exhibit it as well. who knows, but I will say that these spots don't look like regrind at all. It might be colour transfer from something they were in contact with, that also happens with G1s that have had their accessories on them for too long. I am going to guess you had something pink in there that marked your ponies.
Another reason why this cannot possibly be regrind is that it wouldn't make sense for normal ponies, and hard plastic ponies (ponyville) to develop them at the same time and have them look exactly the same.
Have you tried removing them with a magic eraser type sponge?

as for your last question StarSong, yes, G1s can get regrind. Some ponies are more prone to it then others, such as Party time and Cloud Puff (the flutter pony). Every time you buy ponies you should get a detailed description of their condition as regrind is much rarer than mold or so called cancer (brown spots that are a result of a plastic break down as well). There is no guarantee your ponies won't develop it eventually but that's something we all have to live with ;)

Vintergatan, thank you! No,  I haven't tried yet to erase them, because I don't know how to do it right. All the ponies in my little collection haven't had owners before (except Minty), so they haven't need cleaning at all.
Thanks for your answer anyway - I learned lots of new things!

Oh I see :)

The magic eraser I was referring to is a blessing for most of us collectors ^^ The most commonly referred to one is Mr. Clean's magic eraser, but for example, we don't have that in Iceland so I'm just using a generic one. It is a sponge-like thingie that can clean up your pony really well (just be careful on symbols and painted areas, and especially glitter as it can take it off if you press too hard!) but it is known to take away all kinds of stains! So I usually just try that first (if water and soap don't do the trick)

Basically, that sponge is this thing here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melamine_foam

I suggest you try to find it in your store (they are usually in the cleaning section). Otherwise, maybe someone (including myself) can pick some up for you ^^

good luck and don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions ^^

The magic eraser... I'm not sure that I could find it my place yet. It's nice that you can pick up some for me, but sending it from Iceland to Ukraine will take a lot of time =) And our post works pretty bad,  too, so your eraser can lost. I missed a parcel with ponies and I don't want to lose another one. Anyway, most of my ponies are clean, so do I really need it? =)

About questions... Do you know how to make ponies' hair silky and soft, just like it was before? Rainbow Dash's mane and tail are dry, so I'd like to fix it. Thanks!

Well, I'm sure you will do just fine without it, but my line of thought is, if Iceland has it, Ukraine probably has it too as Iceland is very understocked compared to other countries :)

As for the hair, it's the hair conditioner that makes pony hair all lovely. First wash it with shampoo, rinse, and then apply conditioner. I usually leave the conditioner in their hair for 30 minutes or so, and then rinse again. It almost always comes out beautiful and silky.
If not, there is always a flattening iron, but I'm sure your ponies won't need it from what you described.

This thread has some helpful information about cleaning ponies up if you are looking for details. http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,292336.msg136755.html#msg136755

I agree that it does look like some kind of plastic break down unfortunately; the fault is nothing and no ones other than the quality of the manufacture and when the damage is due to the integrity of the plastic itself it cannot be changed back.

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
