« on: June 09, 2013, 05:40:21 PM »
What order do you do your customs?

I rip out the old hair, clean them up, apply whatever epoxy I want, spray with white or black primer, paint, spray with a finishing

if I wanted to do realy pony hair instead of Epoxy hair..... when would I do this?? lol I want to do a holiday pony with real hair(to practice hairing) and then do epoxy xmas lights b/c i mean come on that osunds awesome! but... I really think the epoxy needs the primer and so does the body. wuld rehairing the pony screw up the primer.. like scratch it? and I can't wrap any epoxy around the neck I'm assuming? bleh....

tips? lol ^^

My process goes as such:

-Remove old hair
-Clean up with goof-off
-Prime
-Paint
-Seal
-Add hair
-Add glue inside the head for the hair

Hair always comes last for me. It's the final step, and always the most time consuming.

My process can change based on all I have to do but I'll pretend that I'm doing everything for this one haha

1) Cut off hair
2) boil pony and removed head
3) remove hair plugs and tail
4) acetone off the symbols and eyes
5) wash pony
6) boil pony with RIT dye, then rinse a few times (and repeat as necessary)
7) sculpt
6) paint white base for symbols and sculpted parts
8) symbol/sculpt painting
9) eyes
10) seal paint
11) put new tail in
12) rehair rest of pony
13) sign the bottom (and seal that)
14) style hair

Before I do anything I sketch out the custom with colors and everything so I have a reference, and of course before I style the hair I put the head back on the body. :)

i don't prime so that might be why i don't see the issue. i know a lot of people prime but i've never found it necessary to complete a pony.

i always bait first, but it depends on my design if i hair, paint or sculpt next. i don't mind hairing last, but sometimes i need the tail in, or the head on, before i sculpt or add cloth clothing. sometimes i just prefer to put the hair in first and work the custom around that.

to protect full body repaints while hairing i always seal the row of holes especially well with an acrylic brush on sealer.

last step is always triple thick on the eyes.

-prep bait
-FBR
-seal
-symbols and eyes
-seal
-triple thick gloss the eyes
-rehair
-glue in hair
-reattach head

If I'm doing elaborate symbols/full body design, I'll seal between each layer/step/color too. And if I'm sewing clothes, it comes after all of the above.

I do things in the same order. If I sculpt, that happens before the FBR. Since I'm usually working on several ponies at a time I can spend a whole day only painting eyes, painting symbols, or airbrush baits.

Going to have to make a trip to the craft store, Thanks! I just have a bottle of glossy sealer that you paint on. But Ive noticed it seems to crack up on some paints. I does good on everything else though?

Here's the order of events I've worked out thus far:

- Remove head (and take out G4 neck plugs)
- De-hair
- Remove all unwanted paint
- Add any sculpts
- Paint
- Seal
- Re-hair
- Re-assemble pony
