A guide to mlp hunting for newbs?
« on: June 09, 2013, 12:15:53 PM »
Recently I was lucky enough to have friend in another state  start looking for ponies for me. While I do really appreciate that this person is willing to look for them, she doesn't really know what makes a G1MLP different from other gens or fakies. I gave her a little primer but if there is a guide up somewhere that I can email to her that has  pics and info on how to identify an original MLP from  g3s and fakies and such it would be great if someone could point me toward it.

Thanks!

Dream Valley has a guide here:

http://www.kimsites.net/dreamvalley/faq_id.html#q_identify

One quick way to tell is to flip the pony over and read the hooves. Chances are there will be "Hasbro" carved into the mould somewhere. This isn't a foolproof method but it's not a bad place to start.

Well, I'm sure someone would be around with much more knowledge on this, but many G1s (not everyone though) has the pat pend on the bottoms of their hooves, and Hasbro. Also, just quickly going through My little wiki or Dream Valley/Strawberry reef might give her a pointer to the different generations...?

Not sure how much energy she is willing to invest in finding out what to buy or not, but some research is always the best way to go ;)

i have poeople looking for me as well.. and the simplest way  to weed out the fakies. is  i  told them No  Glass eyes (most fkaes have the glass eyes) as compared to   the real mlp pony eyes. and   none with  big white  blazes on there faces. (that knocks out the  DG fakes)

i know the g1  ponys had hasbro  on thre feet not too sure the other ones did.  but that might make it simple enough and weed out your  fakes.  also i told htem nothing very big.

Yup yup, hasbro and the year are pretty much all they need. Early 80s to mid 90s for most g1s. =)

Yup, I ll third or forth or fifth the check for a brand name :) As long as your friend looks to check that it says Hasbro hopefully she will be on the right track.

As to id'ing the different generations, you could probably make up one page which simply shows the different generations compared to one another that you could email her. Just showing the different body types against one another.

Don't forget the so softs, though.  They don't have any visible markings on their feet, so make sure they are aware of those :)

Many G3's have a magnet on the bottom of one of their hooves so I usually use that as an indicator. Also check for the year date. G1's will mostly have a year from the '80's on the bottom of their hooves. I.E. '85, '86, etc.
