I'm not a picky collector by any means... I don't worry about how the pony will look in a few years. I'm so very short term thinking in collecting. (Wants change quite often.) I just find that when I have paypal funds the one pony that I've been seeking forever ::cough cough in siggy:: is nowhere in sight on the arena... le sigh

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I am not saying that I buy ponies as an investment, waiting to make money on them at a later date.... but if I do ever decide to sell my collection (it's not even entering my head right now but in a few years time when I'm hopefully looking to buy my own place then who knows) then I just like to know that any ponies that I've thrown down a large amount for will retain a similar price.

But for the moment... yeah I think I'll save that money in my account. This is unless an absolute perfect pony comes along and I can't say no of course! :D

Yes! Honey I completely know where you are coming from. Yes, this is a hobby, yes they are relatively cheaply manufactured toys which will potentially develop issues over time. But it is all well and good thinking that to yourself and then fronting up £100 on a pony. Its hard.

My problem is not so much the buying but after its in my collection and perhaps been on display a year or two. I almost dread looking at ponies under the bright lights when I clean them - just in case I find something I dont want to!

I don't worry about it.  If its a pony I want, I buy it.  If it's an expensive pony I want, I save (and save) up for it.  I plan to keep my ponies and don't mind a little degradation in the future - nothing stays perfect forever and at least I got to enjoy it while I could.  :)

Yes yes yes yes yes yes this is me!

Mercynova--I think it's wise to wait until you're sure as almost all ponies are available more than once in a lifetime.  I keep my collection very small (around 18 right now) in part b/c I like it that way but also it saves money AND I do find that I tend to kind of *fret* over my ponies.  I don't like the thought of them getting old!  But as Scarletjul pointed out, it's best to focus on the present and enjoy them now!  So if you do get that prize pony you want, I hope you fully enjoy it :)
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

Yes, they age and there's really nothing that can be done about it.

The way I go about it is I buy the ponies I like in a condition I find acceptable at a price that I willb eok with een if they develop more flaws.  It just takes some patience and I guess you can't be a super picky collector to go about it that way.

If you like expensive ponies and you can afford them, then I say get them.  The suckers are 30 years old and most of them are in pretty good shape after surviving attics and basements and how children treated them.  If in another 30 years they have twice the issues, then they'll still be doing pretty good, I think.  :)

I worry about that constantly too!
I had a MINT (and I do mean MINT) Wigwam. When I got him he was flawless and now he has smooze/cancer/brown small marks on his back legs.

It really makes me feel sad because I went so far out of my way to get one that was super mint :/

I worry a lot about fading hair too. I want to have my ponies on display but my super mint pink haired ponies I worry about fading out.

I stopped upgrading and replacing ponies over this reason, I replaced my 3 smoozed flat foots, and boom they did it again and they were cleaned extremely well before entering my collection. Sme with some others, so I stopped spending money on ponies I already had. All my ponies are fairly well sheilded from the sun too.
