I find that it really helps to take a needle or a drawing pin if your careful near the ears and re-pierce the hair holes as you hair the pony ^.^

Are you using a craft acrylic? I've made 2 all black ponies using airbrush black paint, it's thinner and I used one of the handled   wedge sponges to apply it - it never got to thick on me.

I second the vote for priming it black first.

Use a good quality black paint to start then you won't need so many layers also better quality acrylics have more flex and you should be able to re-hair by simply just pushing a pin through the hair plug holes to clear any paint.  Be careful with primers because they can be I guess chalky is the word and can also be hard.  I'd almost recommend dyeing the pony but that is hit and miss at best.  I also recommend air brushing or using a make up sponge to apply the paint.  They allow better coverage and layers that are more even.

let us know how it goes!

I use Games workshop acrylic paint- only needs one or two coats- or you could dye her black but if you paint over the dye the dye will seep through-

well, dye works well, but you have to let it sit a long timebecause of what LLL said.
i wonder how long dyed ponies have to sit? and is there a way to conceal them to avoid that the dye goes into the paint?
