Varnish help--is this fixable?
« on: June 02, 2013, 12:14:40 PM »
Remember that merry-go-round fakie that I was going to customize for my baby cousin?  Well, she turned out gorgeous, so I put a UV-protectant satin varnish (that said it was safe for ALL paints, specifically including acrylic) on her Friday morning, and left her to dry.  The lady I talked to at the art store said that she customizes vinyl dolls too, and that she'd never had any trouble with the varnish, so I figured it would give the pony a nice look.

...She's still tacky.  Despite being painted with the exact same acrylics (and yes, she was an FBR), her clay base is totally fine; only the pony herself is sticky.

Is this fixable?  Have I ruined the pony?  :(  I was so proud of this custom, and I honestly thought it'd be ready to rehair today.

A layer of Dullcoat should take away the tackyness but it will also take away your shine.

What brand of spray did you use and how did you apply it?  One heavy coat?  You can try if you have a dehumidifier sitting her on top of that for a few days to see if she will dry.

It's Golden-brand archival varnish with UV protection.  I gave it 2 quick (3 second) coats.  It's been "drying " since Friday morning, so at this point, I'd say it's not going to work out without extra help.

And where do I get Dullcote?  I've checked all the art stores around me, from Jo-Ann's to Pearl, and haven't seen it at all.

Michael's and Hobby Lobby both have it and some Walmarts (if the Walmart has a model car section they'll have it). They've changed the label recently. It used to be black and say "Testors Dullcoat" on it, but the new ones are blue and white and say "Testors Spray Lacquer".

Ah.  Michael's is the one store I didn't check!  Now I know where to go after work. :)
