Ponies and moving house?
« on: June 01, 2013, 07:05:38 PM »
Hello! I'm moving out for the first time next week  :P I was wondering if anyone had any tips for making the move with a pony collection? I can't really think of how I'm going to transport them without them rubbing on each other, etc, and their hair getting horribly tangled.

I'll post a picture of my herd once they've settled in  ^.^

I say wrap em up! In white tissue paper, cloth, put em in pastic baggies, whatever you've got. Get them all individually wrapped and fit them together in boxes to move. When you get settled in you have the added bonus of unwrapping all your ponies like they're presents.

My ponies live in storage tubs wrapped in white tissue paper. I also have those silica(sp) gel packs in the boxes to help wih moisture. You might want to avoid baggies depending on how hot it is and if they will be in a moving van. Last time I moved model horses and mlp were in storage tubs an went in the back of the van, so I could regulate temperature. I know that I not always an option though.

I've done it a couple of different ways.  The first time I moved with a sizable collection I did as madhatterda suggests and packed them carefully - I knew they were going to be staying packed for some time and I didn't want them to be damaged.  The second time I moved, I had the luxury of having the new place before we lost the old one, so I dumped everyone into boxes, moved them, and stood them all out on shelves again right away - no worries of damage.  (I talk about this a bit on my blog this week, actually - click my sig to see it.)

Also, if they're going to stay packed for any length of time, make sure they're standing upright - if they're on their sides or squished and they get hot their legs can get pushed out of place and it can be a pain to fix them afterward.  I've had it happen with a short car ride on a hot day.

I asked about this a few months ago, and was told it was important to get acid-free tissue paper? Does any white tissue paper work though? I've had an exceptionally difficult time finding tissue paper that is specifically acid-free.

I used individual zip-lock baggies to transport my collection from the US here to Sweden. Worked great! Everyone's hair was carefully put in so it would stay perfect in the baggies. No one got rubbed and no one's hair was messed up, even after me digging through the boxes trying to organize them when it was finally time to take them all out and place them back on shelves.

I've heard you shouldn't leave them in baggies for an extended period of time (like years), but mine were packed up like that for a few months and were totally fine.

As Elf says it largely depends on how long they are going to be in storage for - the longer the more careful you need to be.

If you want to be cautious, I agree with acid free tissue paper [you can use regular but be aware that it can break down and stick to the plastic over time] and/or individual zip lock bags [left open or with air vents]. Also make sure you do not store too many on top of one another as pony plastic can be surprisingly prone to being pushed out of shape with too much weight [just about every single pony in the Love Melody pose being a case in point :P].

Whatever you choose to do- if you think there is a chance they will spend any significant time somewhat sealed up- you might want to add silica gel packets to each wrapped pony or a bunch to the container itself-  it will keep moisture from being trapped and mold from developing.  ALso it is very very cheap on amazon and elsewhere.

I have just gone through the same thing!  Half my collection is still at my parents' house, but I kept my ponies in plastic tubs.

It seemed to work pretty well, but I'm still trying to find space for these ponies.  There really is no "easy" way to transport a huge collection, but it is find to revisit your collection.
