Coffee & friend WIP
« on: May 24, 2013, 04:52:12 AM »
So this is the second one of my projects I'm at least half way through with. The pony used to be a Sunny Daze with an unremovable streak of glue along her flank (thus the lines of instant coffee to cover it up), the little critter is a random street find.

http://fav.me/d66dkfy

Materials used so far:
acrylic wool (originally bought for the alternate re-hair of Butterscotch)
coffee beans
instant coffee
glue

She needs a major clean-up, a new eye colour, and a complete mane.

I don't know if I'll ever finish a custom because I don't have the patience for a full re-hair ...

I like the tail a lot!

I'm not sure the coffee streaks work honestly?

Neat idea, if you ever want to do it again, I would recommend mixing the coffee grounds with gesso and painting them on to get the texture, then once dry painting the.  This will help seal them so they do not take on moisture or bleed as well as give you a nice neat texture.

I do like the texture to the tail, you could also just go with filling the mane plugs and give her a forelock.

thanks folks!
um, what is gesso?
Yeah, I'm thinking about redoing the streaks because I'm not so happy either, it's all in an experimental stage^^ I could replace them with paint or just keep her white and ignore the messy glue. Or how about a line of coffee beans along her complete flank? I could add one bean in the back and two or three in the direction of her head ...
Any idea what would happen if I tried to remove the glue with sanding paper?

Have you tried acetone?  A very fine sanding paper sounds like a good idea if you are painting over the pony anyway?

Hey maybe a design based on the little hearts that show up in your espresso drink ?

Or a little mug of Joe ?

I don't plan to do a full repaint, I've done two by now and it was a pain in the hand (literally). Acetone didn' work, I already tried it when I was removing cutie mart etc. I guess I'll try sanding it with a gentle nail file because a painted design to my liking wouldn't cover all the glue. Then maybe give her a organza bow around her neck as a distractor - got some cream coloured organza ribbon lying around (was making invitations recently XD), so it will be coffee with cream. Or I could use it to tie her main into a loose braid and just cover the sanded spot with it ... so many options, hmmmm :D

Next projects to work on after dealing with this coffee stealing lady:
- getting the green numbers on the now black nerd pony (FBR #2)
- I want to make a star or galaxy themed custom, and I ordered a big bag of small silver bells ... want to use them somehow as well.
- finishing the manes of Butterscotch (she'll get a new cutie mark sometime in the future, saving this for a special occasion) and the Irish fella

Gesso is a white primer you can get at any large craft or art store.  It is used to prime a surface so it takes paint better and can also be used to seal things so they do not bleed or leak color.  It can also work like a glue.

As to the glue, the sanding might work but only if it is a hard glue not something soft.

You could work with the streaks, I think some sand mixed into the gesso would give you more of an in scale coffee grind texture.

Best of luck with her.
