straightening pony hair - any tips or tricks??
« on: May 18, 2013, 03:25:00 PM »
Hello all you fun people,

I was wondering if any of you had any tips or tricks on how to straighten and/or curl pony hair?

Some of my ponies' hair is crooked, some frizzy, some tangled...I'd like to make them prettier  ^.^

Thank you in advance & have a good weekend!

When straightening try and make sure you use some straighteners with different heat settings and use the lowest one if possible, that's always been hot enough when I've been straightening pony hair. I'm sure others will have better information for you regarding curling and other styles :)

One important thing - don't let the hair get too hot, allow it to cool down otherwise it may melt.

I got a pair of mini Remington straighteners free with a hairdryer I bought. they're only about a finger's width. They don't seem to get overly hot - they work perfectly on pony hair with they exception of the white/pink colour changing hair (like on Mainsail). melted everywhere.

If you try human hair straighteners, make sure you try it on bait first!

If you use heat elements make sure you use one that has a numbered setting and don't go higher than 4.  I use conditioner and a curl iron on 4 then wash the conditioner out and set in perm rods over night.

My advice is to make sure you really soak the hair in water and conditioner and don't hold the flattening iron too long, just a few seconds.

I have a flattening iron which you can't adjust the heat on (I just turn it off for a while if it gets too hot) and I have never melted the hair on any pony. I have even flattened color changing hair (Beachball's) without melting.

Thank you all for these tips!!

I didn't know it was possible to use a flattening or curling iron. I was always real careful about that. First I'll do a test and try it on an "ugly" pony if I can find one.

Thanks again.

I curl with boil-perms using a drinking straw.  For G4 show-style curls I cut the straw; for the pretty long ringlets use a whole straw.  Pour boiling water over the hair while it's in the "curlers," and let it dry.  Voila, perfect curls without the risk of using heated products! :)

As others have said, no matter what kind of doll you're working with, make sure its hair is very wet when you use a straightening iron on it, especially if you're not sure what kind of synthetic hair you're working with (like for fixing up a custom that doesn't look so nice anymore).

Straighteners/flat irons are the ultimate pony accessory :P As long as hair is very wet and slathered in conditioner, you will be fine. Make sure they are set low and work your way through the hair gradually - I go half a cm at a time and I know lots of people who even work with smaller sections.

And as others have advised if you havent tried this before...test with a bait until you get the settings and your process right!

Good luck.

Don't forget, some of the G3s and G1's had specifically frizzy or curly or crimped styles, so you may want to restore those.  :)
