What style of auction would be better?
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:51:35 AM »
So, I am going to need to make some money quickly.. and so I (regretfully) have to sell off some of my collection...

One thing that I'm not sure on, is HOW I should auction.
I was going to sell my G4 first, because my G1's are so very dear to me...

Would it make more sense to go by series (IE, make a lot with all the Fashion style ponies)
or by character (IE a lot with ALL Applejacks)

Any input would be helpful!
Thanks!

Sorry it has to happen.   My only advice is that a "lot" of FS ponies might have trouble selling because of the high cost... For example if you sold five, you might be asking for $75 total, which is harder to swallow than individually.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck.

Posting lots is generally not that profitable, that's a route you want to go when your goal is to move things fast to make space. The cheaper the better with lots, because shipping is high on them. Do not expect them to make as much as they're worth. I tried to find an ended auction I saw once but couldn't find it again, so to relay an example from memory- someone started an auction lot for about 5-7 MIB G4 Rainbow Dash items (fashion style, glimmer wing, shine bright, singles, etc), and I think they started it low as an open auction because it only sold for $25!! Plus eBay gets $2.50, and Paypal takes a bit as well. Poor seller, I'd imagine they were expecting it to go higher D;

 When doing auctions, I always post things individually. This way, shipping is lower to those interested in specific items, and if people are interested in your other items they can bid on those, too, and just combine on shipping. I also find that individually things will move faster (the more desirable stuff at least). Huge luck with your sales! I hope you raise the money you need. I'm currently auctioning stuff myself because of a financial tight spot ;P

I would NOT sell in lots by character. For the FS size I would sell individually because they are a little more expensive. For Brushable size I would sell in small lots (if your set on doing lots) but mix up the characters so you would have for example a Blossomforth, a Rainbow Dash and a Twinkleshine together. I think your more likely to be able to get rid of your mane 6 ponies if you group them with harder to find characters. Otherwise it's not worth buying them online since they're so available in store. Hope that helps :)

I completely agree with Cool Breeze. The first consideration is that if you sell in lots you will more often than not make less [and sometimes substantially less] than the ponies are worth individually. So if its a matter of speed over final value then lots are probably the way to go. However, you will get more value if you separate out.

Personally I would initially list things individually [unless you have some really common hard to sell ponies and those I would pop in a cheap lot] and then if after however long you set for sales you are left with a balance of ponies, you could put them in a group lot for a reduced collective price.

If you do decide to sell by lot, I agree you would be better with groups of the same type of pony but different characters of ponies - lots like that seem to do the best.
