Identifying pony "problems"--Is this just dirt?
« on: May 08, 2013, 08:21:07 PM »
OK, I'm new to restoring and the like, and Sky Dancer's got some spots that really bug me.  She's been in quarantine lately, just in case, but she misses the other ponies and wants to be on their shelf again!

Are these just regular dirt?  Or are they mold/smooze/whatever?  Does my dear childhood pony have The Cancer?  I kinda want to know before I break out the Magic Erasers and nasty chemicals, because I don't want to ruin her accidentally.

She has tiny dots between her eye and ear, too, but they're proving impossible to photograph with what I have on hand (an iPhone and a webcam).  They look kinda like a cross between pindot and pencil marks.

Bit hard to tell from the pics, but it doesn't look like plastic deterioration, most likely ingrained dirt.  Her symbol looks rubbed, which often goes along with ingrained dirt.

Definitely difficult to tell from the graininess of the photos. Appears to be dirt and symbol rub. Definitely does not look like cancer or mold. I would try with magic eraser, just be cautious of the symbol paint, it will remove it.

Cancer is not contagious to other ponies, if that is what you're worried about. :)

The one that's really bothering me is the set of tiny "dots" between her eye and her ear, but they're so tiny, they just don't show up with the pitiful cameras I have.  All the pindot pictures I've seen have looked more blackish, but these look more like pencil marks (grayish, shine in the light a wee bit).  Could this just be metal that rubbed off another toy, or is this a potential mold problem?

Most likely ingrained dirt, or what we call "smooze".  Cancer is a different issue.  :)

Hot hot hot water and your fingernails should get it out.

Thank goodness!  I don't have to quarantine my little girl anymore, and she can be prettied up with no nasty chemicals (I have to clean house with vinegar, because I react so badly to household cleaners and bleaches).

Sky Dancer is going to be beautiful again--and if I have extra hair left from making Zena, I think I'll freshen up her cut-down mane, too. :)

As others have said its tough to say from the images. Initially I would try acetone or a magic eraser on the mark above her symbol to see if its surface and only if it doesnt move retreat to a good scrub. The one on the symbol you cant use either of these on as you will end up removing the paint to a careful scrub is your only bet.

The one under her foot could be an age mark or even the start of a little spot of regrind but as its tough to say from the picture - I would again try the acetone and magic eraser first.

If its tough to tell what it actually is...then the only way you ll know for certain is to give a variety of treatments a try! :)
