Need a computer/tech savvy person! Help please!

Basically, our old computer.... R.I.P. It would freeze, and worst of all BLUE SCREEN. For no reason at all, and give it it's due, it was 8 years old, and was cheap when we bought it. Well, we don't have much money, but what we do have, we went and bought a brand new, expensive computer (HP Pavilion) and it's beautiful. Got it up and running today (was waiting on a new HDR cable to connect to the monitor from eBay) Basically, here's my problem; we did manual regular backups on the old gateway to a 'Lacie' backup device. Now I can't for the life of me fathom how to get the old backup from Lacie onto the new computer. I reckon maybe it needs Lacie disk installed on it, and also office installed, but all the backed up files have weird names with stars and squiggles and stuff, and it's just... 

Oh well, I'm sure I'll figure it, but in the meantime, please, if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

well, I googled it and here's what the site itself says.  But what you said about everything having weird name's is worrying.

I had stars and squiggles and things as the filenames on my xbox memory stick yesterday, which meant it was corrupted.

Install all the stuff required for the Lacie drive, and see what happens.

Thank you! I'll try it, I reckon if I install the Lacie Disk onto the new computer, and then manually transfer them all, they should go back to normal, since it should recognize the format?

It sounds like those files might be corrupted   Did you safely remove hardware when disconnecting it?
