Two of a kind, one must go... but which one?
« on: April 13, 2013, 11:06:47 AM »
I do not allow myself to keep duplicates. So when I get a duplicate I compare it to the one already in my herd. But I'm coming up with some hard decisions. For example: I have a TAF Sundance #1 who has no marks on her body but her hair is kinda straight and although her hair still changes color it's not as intense as #2. #2's downfall is she has a couple spots that look like rust that I can't get off. Then I have a Princess Primrose #1 that has straight but not alot of tinsel where #2 has lots of tinsel but some of it is out of control. For those of you who do the same with duplicates... how do you choose?

It always takes me a bit to choose. I do not like to keep duplicates as I know there are many collectors who would love a pony:) Voting by your descriptions I would keep #2 mostly because of the vibrant hair changes as I feel it is harder to come by. I am looking for her by the way and they both sound amazing:P hehehe As for Primrose I would take #2. I have no issues with tinsel even if it is crazy. I would rather have tinsel crazy then little tinsel.....

You do the same method as I normally do. I have in the past posted both ponies and which ever one a pony wanted I would let them and have and keep the other.  If I have multiple people talking to me about, I do let them know my situation and just say first come first serve:)

I had a similar situation once with a Sparkler.  One had gorgeous factory curl hair but her body color seemed faded in comparison to the duplicate.  Since #2 also had pretty good factory curl (just not as nice as #1) I ended up keeping her instead.

I say get rid of the one that has the flaw that bothers you most.

If I ever somehow ended up with dupes, I'd probably keep the one with the nicer hair ^^

There are two things that makes it easier for me.

1. Body and head mismatches, I can't take it. I will always replace those.
2. If they both have a nice colour with no mismatches, then I choose the one with better hair. I dont mind a few marks, but hair is important to me. :D

I have this problem a lot. When I absolutely can't decide, I get out my wallet, buy a Mint one, and sell both of the little buggers!

That'll teach them to be difficult!!

I think if I wasn't able to decide easily - I'd leave both on a table or dresser - somewhere in regular plain site, that you'll see often. Then keep whichever you get drawn to the most / like looking at the most.

Lol that is why *most* of my collection are restores, and then every so often there's a minty one! It all started with the pony brides...

LOL Stormness_1... that's a good point! Well I think I decided on both of the #2's. Now I have another dilema... two Baby Crumpet's. One with purple symbols and one with pink. Fading or variant?

The Baby Crumpet is a fading issue. She has that notoriously problematic red/blue pigment combo which leeches out really badly - similar to what we sometimes see with Gusty's symbol. Her symbol either fades to aqua or to pink depending. So I would personal, keep the purple symbol.

As to the others I think a lot of the time it is largely down to what you can best live with. For me I cant cope with permanant marks or hair cuts but I can live with a symbol or eye scratch es or evens some wild hair. Its such a personal thing as to which problems move ponies from being nice to flawed. For me I would keep the sundance number 1 and primrose number 2.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

When it comes to hair vs body marks, I personally can't stand marks. I like nice hair on a pony but would prefer a spotless body and have haircuts and/or frizzy hair. The way I look at it is hair can always be rehaired in extreme issues but there is no solution to permanent bodymarks. I will take a pony that I don't have with any of these issues though :) I just can't say no to a pony I don't have!

I don't like having duplicates of ponies (not counting a certain set that is slowly becoming an unofficial army  :shakefist:)there are a few reasons why I would have multiples but it is not that common practice for me. I don't normally have a problem with choosing which ones stay. But to be fair most of the ponies in my collection I have decided to keep for one reason or another.  for example I have a princess Tiffany that is off white (well more of a pearl colour than than manky colour) but other wise excellent then I got a lot of the princess ponies and another one that was in total mint condition. I sold the mint one simply because I was happy with my version and another collector would get more pleasure out of her than I would.

Don't do it!!!!!!

You absolutely have to keep both.  ^.^

I bought the Pinkie Pie/White Celestia set and was all ready to put Pinkie into my bait box when Mum said that I couldn't do that. I can't remember what her reasoning was, but Pinkie went onto the pony shelf.

At some point I guess I will need to thin out duplicates from all gens but I just get too attached.
