FBR Help for all Generations please!
« on: April 09, 2013, 03:51:54 PM »
I have done FBR's before, on all gens, but not at the same time. This last few days for a project Ive had to do FBR on a G1, a G3 and a G4 all at the same time. I stripped them all, cleaned them all and painted them all exactly the same method, at the same time, with the exact same paint. Createx paints. Now I found that the g4 only needed 2 coats to be beautiful and show no brush strokes its like it stuck to the pony super well. The g1 needed 3 coats. and the G3 needed 5. It felt like that took forever just wouldn't stop showing brush strokes. Now I then dabbed Mod Podge along the hairline on all, once that dried I sealed all with 3 coats of testors dullcote spray. and then last night rehaired. Again the g4 rehaired almost perfect with no missing paint marks, the G1 was the worst for bits of paint that came off, an the g3 not very well either. Is this a common thing for these gens, or is it just the individual ponies I had, as I've said, I've done all gens before an some are better than others, an this was the first time I delt with all 3 gens at the exact same time, so could compare. Is this common? for these gens, just curious if others have found this too.
I have bought an airbrush so these will be my last FBR's by hand anyway, but just wanted to know what others have found with this!! Cheers in advance for any input on this!  :satisfied:

g4s have a much thicker plastic, and therefore, much less give during the rehairing process.
part of the reason I always rehair first, the give in the plastic on, g1s especially, generally ends up damaging the paint.

I would guess that the number of coats of paint had to do with the original body color? maybe? or the color of paint you were using

I have found that I can rehair any Gen after a FBR long as, first that I'm not punching any new holes, that always seems to chip the paint on the G1 and G3s. Two I usally put an extra coat or two of sealant around the plug holes before rehairing.

I have found that G1s vary... I have most where I don't have any problems with the paint flaking at all during rehairing, but I had one baby (baby nibbles I think it started out as) that I turned into a wind whistler and it was a NIGHTMARE, just touching the thing would cause HUGE chunks of paint to just peel off, it was terrible, I had to redo her twice before the paint stuck long enough for me to rehair it, even now I'm terrified to touch her for fear the paint will flake off.

g3s I have never a had a problem with paint flaking...

I've never done a g4 so I can't give my opinion on that.

One thing I always do before rehairing is I carefully widen the holes with a safety pin and I use a rehairing tool if that helps

i've airbrushed a g1 and a g3 with the exact same paint (watered down acrylic), sealed both with the same watered down mod podge. both rehaired fine, but the g1 was much harder to airbrush, it was almost like it had paint retarder or something on it, the paint just seemed to evaporate off and the paint is easily chipped now, whereas with the g3, it's like the paint was glue, nothing will budge it. i didn't do these at the same time, so maybe my paint consistency differed a little, but i did notice on the g1 that the head covered better than the body...

I agree with Alatariel-Silimaure - seems to depend on the G1. I used a Baby Ember for a swap once and had tons of issues with the paint sticking once the rehair was underway. Used a Baby Glory, and no issues at all. Both were FBRs. Honestly, it seems to be a crapshoot with both how many coats of paint it'll take and whether the paint will stick through a rehair.

I've been toying with the idea of lightly sanding all baits with a fine sandpaper (~400-600 grit) before starting anything with them. :| Still not sure if it'll help, though; as mentioned, different grades of plastic were used for the different generations. Age of the plastic probably has something to do with it, too. ^^;
My creativity keeps running into a lack of time and resources.
I'm also available via twitter at @Kazzellin :)

So many projects!! What do I want to work on? :awake:

Interesting, thanks for sharing everyone! I do seal with modpodge, and then testors before rehairing and I use a rehairing tool.

So do you leave the hairline then? unpainted if you hair first?
I don't think the number of coats was from the original body colour as the G4 and the G1 were darker, and I was lightening them, the G3 was already light an she needed the most paint, an they were all painted the same colour paint, the exact same mix. so its weird. maybe its just the individuals!

They tend to all vary in my experience. Certain paint colors cover better and lighter ponies tend to be covered better. Likewise, certain paint colors tend to chip off more than others as well as the plastic giving a bit differently on each pony. G1s tend to be the worst for the differences though because alot of it depends on how the plastic aged.
