Have your kids had croup?
« on: February 24, 2014, 05:53:43 PM »
Has anyone here experienced croup before? My son(whose 3) has it and his cough sounds awful. He's also had fever, congestion, and his voice sounds terrible:( We are using tylenol, a vaporizer in his room, and the doctor said to take him out in the cold air sometimes as it helps the inflammation.
I hope he's feeling better soon. It's hard when my kiddos are sick. I wish I could take it upon myself.
Any moms here have tips/suggestions for kids with croup?

I remember the very first time my son had croup. It was alarming and distressing. We pretty much did all those things you are doing, and we would also run a hot steamy shower (he wasn't in it) just to steam up the room and soothe the breathing. to you and to junior.

Sourdough, thank you. I forgot to mention we did that too. It helped a bit. The doctor said it would probably take a week for him to get well:(

My kids haven't had it, but a few of my friends' kids have.  They've done pretty much all you are doing.   I hope he gets better soon!

Oh, the poor wee thing. Yep, both my girls have had it. My eldest has had it a couple of times and bore it worst as her asthma rears up when she has anything cold/sniffle related.

It's a viral thing so there's nothing that can really 'treat' it, just alleviate the symptoms. And it's always worse at night. That barking cough is just awful. I think you're doing all you can. We found that getting our babe out of bed and calming her and cuddling her whilst standing by an open door in the night air (wrapping a blanket around her if it was cold) was very helpful. About a week to get over it completely if I recall, though the first couple of nights are undoubtedly the worst.

Best wishes for a quick recovery

I had it when I was around two or three years old. So I don't remember much but my mom told me years later. That she would sit with me in the bathroom filled up with steam (from the shower running).  Also slathering my chest with Vicks Vapor Rub helped.

Not much but she tried to keep me calm and comfortable, not easy because I have asthma. And anything settling into my chest made everything worse.

Hope your little one is better soon.

Try vics if you haven't already--that's mainly what got me through it if I remember correctly.

Getting sick is never fun--though im sure your little one will pull through fine <3

I hope your child gets well soon. It is so painful to see your children suffer.

My 18 months old baby girl had some symptoms and my pediatrician told me how to react if she had an attack. Fortunately (and every night I cross my fingers) she hasn't had any. Truth be told, the pediatrician gave us a preventive treatment and she slept with us for several nights so I could be more careful of her. I got very scared, so I can't imagine what it must be to go through it.

Thanks for your tips everyone. I have tried steam but not vicks yet. Ladypinwheel, I have been sleeping on the floor in his room just to make sure he's breathing okay. I'm not getting much sleep but I'd rather keep an eye on him. I have heard that croup can get bad very quickly.

My Mr 3 has it now. Starts off with a cold sore, then the cold, then croup. The first 2 times were pretty bad, and he was prescribed predmix, but this time it's not so bad, thank god. The predmix is really strong stuff, can only have 2 doses, so I hate giving it to him :(
